Question

Weak signal strength

Asked by: Unlucky_man

My PC (with Belkin Wireless G USB Network adapter) and an AP are on the different flours and the signal is very weak. Can an indoor omni direction antenna (on my end) help me? What sort of antenna is the best? How can I connect the antenna with my Belkin USB adapter?
Thank you.

normally it shouldn't matter which wireless device has the external antenna connected to, but in this particular case, the AP is recommended to have the antenna , because the only way I know you can attacha an antenna to a wireless USB device is to open it up, cut the cabling on the board and attach two wires and then the antenna. This will introduce parasite impedance however, so go with a 5 to 7dbm gain  antenna on the AP side and it should work. Different levels in a building means obstacles(floors), which is not good at all with 2.4GHz frequency. A few tens of meters in distance however should be close enough for a 6dbm antenna to cover, even through walls.

I'd also attach the antenna to the AP. It makes more sense to have the good antenna on a device that first is stationary, becuase usually the antenna itself is also meant to be mounted. Another reason for that is because you would try find the best location for it so that other devices can get the optimal connection to it. Also, if it were the other way around you would have to use a special antenna for every PC you use, which would be far more expensive.

A special antenna can improve your connection, but you'll have to find the best location for it by try and error. Also, if there is a lot of metal in the walls of the floors, this will decrease the reception and then a special antenna will also have it's problems. What you should also try is to use different channels until you have found the one which best suits you. And make sure you don't have too many other electrical appliances nearby which could cause an impact, like wireless phones, microwaves etc.

I know this may sound simplistic, but have you tried raising the power of your USB adaptor, so it works on maximum performance as opposed to maximum battery life. This can normally be done from within the driver properties in device manager, or with the bundled client software if you're using it?

Forget the antenna for the moment.....  For communications to establish a good signal, you need a strong signal at both ends (the AP and the MU)

Do not open up the AP and cut the antenna cable!!! this can lead to all sorts of problems (transmitting outside of the legal frequency power EIRP and even burning your AP)  802.11g has a very good coverage, but can be impared by such things as, thickness of floors, interference, signal absorbtion etc.

Try to do a survey of the location...  How thick are the floors?  how much water or humans are between the 2 points, how much metal is between the 2 points etc.

Increase the power outage of the 2 devices (but ensure they are within the legal limits)

Try an AP that supports divirsity (an ap with 2 antennas that detects which antenna has the strongest signal and transmits / receives on that antenna)

If you are still having problems, then  maybe a Yagi antenna fixed on the exterior of the building may do the trick.  again one is needed at both ends and they must point to each other.

Omni directional antennas transmit all around the antenna, where as a directional antenna(Yagi), is focused.
