Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Wifi adapter (PC card) - win98SE | Internet access only lasts about 5 min. while wireless connection shows OK

Hello Experts,

 I am trying to get my friends Dell Inspiron 3500 Windows 98SE in good working order after it has been abused by a teenager.  There were a couple viruses that had to be cleaned and some annoying programs that had to be removed, and now I am trying to get the wireless access back up.

My problem: Since I've gotten a hold of the laptop it has never been able to get internet access for more than about 5 minutes. When I start the computer, I can open up the browser and go online but after about 5 minutes it stops working. The wireless connection shows all is OK -- it never says that the connection is not there -- I'll just get timeouts because internet access suddenly stops.

The only time that internet access works is within the first 5 minutes of starting the computer.  If I start the computer and wait, then try to get online, it won't work -- I have to get on right when Windows starts or it's no deal.

I have tried two different adapters -- the original one that I think used to work is Netgear WG511T. I also tried my Linksys WPC54G -- did the same thing but was also really buggy (I don't think it's meant for Win98).

I have tried on two different wireless networks -- one Linksys G, and one Motorola G router. I am currently trying to get it going on the Motorola.

I am not using WEP or any security key, just MAC filtering.

I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew.

I have reinstalled the driver.
