Are you connected to a network that may have policies set?

Browse All TopicsI have a problem with an XP Corporate installation on my laptop. Can insert a USB key and the system detects it and installs the drivers, go into Explorer and the drive is not visible.
Go into Disk Management, the drive is show as being there, correct FAT system and state is Healthy but NO drive letter.
So assign a drive letter manual (and even reformatted) and it still does not show in explorer, or in fact anywhere in windows.
Have reinstalled (repair) XP, done sfc /scannow, and still it persists.
The strange thing is, I can drop into a dos shell and log onto the relevant drive, and copy/move/delete files that way....but not in windows.
I dont want to do a fresh install of XP as I have so much stuff on the drive. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Graeme

Hi,
Well I went through every option that was mentioned in the TECHSPOT link posted, all were applicable in my case, but non of the fixes they mentioned worked.
I did download the program "explorerxp" and that shows the usb keys just fine and allows me to copy to them and work on them in general, so I guess it must be an issue with explorer, incidentally, the drive does not show up in "My computer" either.
Have also tried it connected to the network and as standalone, we have no policies to restrict USB or portable drives.
Really pulling my hair our with this, well at least I can access it with explorerxp for now
Cheers
Graeme
TweakUI has a function to "hide" specific drive letters from view in Explorer. You can download it from MS and install it, then check the "Explorer" node in the navigation tree (I think that's where it is) and make sure all drive letters are displayed. What drive letter do you access it as in DOS or "ExploreXP"?
