open My Network Places, and click on View Workgroup Computer from the left column
double click on your main xp pro system
you should see the shared printer listed here now
right click the printer and click Connect
it will ask to install the drivers, let it do that
when finish, try to print now
it should work fine this time :)

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 12:49:55ID: 19037211

When I do as suggested both computers show up but the printer is not visible unless I click on the icon for the main computer.  If I click connect on the printer nothing happens

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-05 at 12:53:00ID: 19037217

that's normal, you should see the printer listed ONLY after clicking the main computer, because its the main computer who is sharing this printer.

you have to right click on the printer and choose Connect, after that it should change the Connect option to Disconnect when you right clcik it, is it doing so?

also open your Printers and Faxes from start menu, is this shared printer listed here now after Connecting?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:02:23ID: 19037231

The connect option is not changing to disconnect.  The printer has always been listed in the printers and faxes on the main computer and it says that sharing is enabled.  I don't know if its significant but in the workgroup area there is an icon for the printer and also and icon for printers and faxes (which shows the printer when you left click that icon) listed in the screen for the main computer connections.

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:29:36ID: 19037273

I really beleive the porblem is somehow with my laptop rather than ny main computer because I can't seem to see any of the workgroupo items on the laptop even though I am connecting to the internet just fine.  When i try to look at the workgroups on the laptop it gives me a message that says "Ms home is not accessable.  You might not have permission ti use this network resource"

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:50:54ID: 19037380

that means you cannot see the other computers at all, so this is the only reason you cannot use the printer :)

can other system see this laptop?
are all these system on the same workgroup?
have you checked the IP addresses of this laptop, if its set to the correct accordance to the router and main system?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:54:15ID: 19037402

The other system can see the laptop.  I believe the IP addresses are correct because the laptop is connceting to the internet through the router.

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:55:55ID: 19037410

and they are in the same workgroup on the main computer

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 13:58:42ID: 19037428

I take that back! I just che3cked and now the laptop has disappeared from the woekgtoup list on the main computer and I'm psotive it was there earlier when I looked at the printers.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-05 at 14:03:40ID: 19037453

ummm.....this is kind of stupid question......but lemme ask to make sure.
after setting up the wireless network.....did you restart the main computer as well as the laptop?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 14:14:47ID: 19037495

Yes I did but thanks for asking.  I am now showing both computers in the workgroup again, but I tried to locate the printer on the net work from the laptop and it still can't find it

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-05 at 14:21:44ID: 19037512

you must not be able to share files also.....right?
what kind of firewall you are running on this laptop....windows original or a third-party?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-05 at 14:28:51ID: 19037532

Nope can't share files either just internet.  I'm running Norton Internet sercurity 2007 but I tird connecting with the program completely disabled and I got the same results.  I can see the network one level up but the neither computer shows in the workgroup part

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-05 at 16:40:35ID: 19037755

im sorry to say this....but i don't trust norton....it loves to create every type of problem in networking!

if you have it installed on both the systems, disable the norton firewall completely, and restart both the systems(make sure the firewall is still turned off), and now check if it can see the main xp pro system?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-05-08 at 04:51:09ID: 19048991

I still couldn't see the main system with both Noroton firewalls disabled

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-05-08 at 07:56:16ID: 19050315

check the IP of your main system and try to ping it from cmd from your laptop...is it pinging it fine?

by: leonardtPosted on 2007-06-18 at 13:56:01ID: 19310618

I ended up using second party networking software to resolve the issue since none of the suggestions seemed to get me any closer to the solution.  I am asking that the question be deleted.
