Question

connecting two xp devices

Running XP on desktop and laptop
desktop can ping laptop
laptop cannot ping desktop
both can ping gateway
router sees both devices and has assigned ip addresses to both
laptop shows arp table with entry for desktop

I have disabled the firewall on both devices
I have even attempted to use netbeui to connect these two devices.

The desktop complains of a ethernet controller driver missing, but I am fairly confident this is for an unused wireless adapter installed (according o Everest).

What else can I try?

Try disabling the unused wireless adapter

Good idea, but there is no driver installed for the adapter.
Under Other devices, I have a question mark icon next to Ethernet Controller.
Everest detects that as the Dlink wireless, but there is no other associated driver installed for it.
I have tried to even locate one, but Dlink's download fails for me.

I have also run the winsock repair utility, but no luck there either.

Interesting development.
From the desktop, I cannot ping its local IP address.
I can ping out and surf the internet fine.  Any idea what would prevent this?
Hosts file is empty.

what do you see in
"ipconfig /all"
"route print"

ipconifg /all reveals the ip address info:
192.168.11.3/24
dhcp is enabled and the lease and wins/dns all appear legit.
route print also returns normal looking routes
I can also successfully ping the localhost/loopback address.

I am starting to suspect a corupt installation of Norton Internet Security, however my attempt to uninstall it fails about midway through. I am not sure if that is the culprit or not, but I cannot remove it to verify this..

Remove Norton with symnrt download and then re-test:

Norton is notorious for getting in the way...
