The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

My Wireless Icon is gone...

Tags: HP, DV, Laptop, Wireless Network
My Wireless Network Icon is gone.  There is a switch on the front of my computer that controls the on/off of the card.  The card is staying "off", no matter which way I turn the switch.

Also, the Icon in my taskbar and my LAN icon has disappeared.  I've tried going into the properties and showing the icons but it still won't show up.  Please tell me how I might fix this.

Did you check in device manager > Network Adapter .... are they there?

02.13.2008 at 04:00PM PST, ID: 20889726
it has Broadcom 802.11 - MWL Filter Miniport and 1394 net adapter #2,  I'm not sure what's supposed to even be there.

02.13.2008 at 04:01PM PST, ID: 20889730
if you have pressed the button there should be a light that comes on. If the light is on the card is active if the light is off it is inactive.

assuming your using Windows XP
The next thing to check would be to right click on Network places (or got to control panel network connections) right click on the wireless connection and if it says ENABLE then it has been disabled select enable and you should be able to now access wireless.

If that does not work right click on my computer go to hardware then device manager and look under network adapters make sure there is no errors such as an exclamation, or x etc...

let me know

02.13.2008 at 04:04PM PST, ID: 20889745
You have lost the network adapter.

try pressing the button on the laptop that shows the antenna symbol the light should come on.. then check your device manager network adapter again.

If it still not listed reboot the system press f8 go into safe mode with networking check device manager see if it listed if not then the last thing to try would be to go in the BIOS it will say press such and such key to enter SETUP when the pc boots up press that key and check for wireless and see if it is enabled.

If all of this is correct I would say your wireless card went bad

02.13.2008 at 04:04PM PST, ID: 20889746
The light stays off, no matter if i have the switch on or off.

Network places:  The wireless connection Icon is not there anymore

and

no errors in device manager

02.13.2008 at 04:05PM PST, ID: 20889750
which means contact the manfacturer you'll need a new board since this is an integrated wireless card

02.13.2008 at 04:06PM PST, ID: 20889756
IN device manager click the topmost item should be your computer then click action scan for hardware changes if nothing comes up like I said try safe mode if nothing then try the bios if still nothing contact the manufacturer your wireless card is bad which is part of your motherboard.

02.13.2008 at 04:07PM PST, ID: 20889759
Try Alt-F2 then the button on the laptop.

<<<< it has Broadcom 802.11 - MWL Filter Miniport  >>>> Your wireless card is there, and you said there is no error. That is good sign.

Now, you might try system restore back to sometime that you knew system worked fine and so does network .

Try that and post back.

02.13.2008 at 04:29PM PST, ID: 20889870
I've tried two system restores with no luck, earlier today.  I've got the wireless adapter in device manager.   However,  My thinking is it may be the switch, since the light is the "off" color.  Could that be possible.  The thing that bothers me is even the LAN icon isn't there.

Is the Windows Wireless Zero configuration service started in start>run>services.msc?

02.13.2008 at 04:36PM PST, ID: 20889906

02.13.2008 at 04:53PM PST, ID: 20889986
what is it listed as in device manager specifically ?

02.13.2008 at 04:54PM PST, ID: 20889991
can you post a screenshot of all the items under network that are showing in device manager ?

02.13.2008 at 04:56PM PST, ID: 20889998
the MWL Filter Miniport is not the actual card that is the miniport driver there should be more then that there

02.13.2008 at 04:57PM PST, ID: 20890002
I just uninstalled the wireless in network manager and tried to scan for hardware changes and it's not finding anything.  I'm guessing the card is dead...

02.13.2008 at 05:22PM PST, ID: 20890130
your thoughts?

02.13.2008 at 05:46PM PST, ID: 20890259
when you say you uninstalled the wireless network card are you referring to the Broadcom 802.11 - MWL Filter Miniport if you are that was actually not your card but a miniport filter driver (this is not your actual wireless card or driver). If you card is completely missing the operating system is not detecting it if the light is off it will not detect it. The light should be lit if it recieving power.

Did you check BIOS and make sure it was not disabled in there ?

also did you try what Kutyi suggested:
Try Alt-F2 then the button on the laptop ?

If still no go and you checked also in safe mode with networking to make sure there are no errors or other drivers (make sure when in device manager your showing hidden devices). Then I would say the internal card is dead or you could be right the switch could be bad. Unless your out of warranty and want to attempt taking apart the laptop and checking wires and possibly re-wiring a switch or your experienced with a multimeter I would say call the manufacturer and get it fixed.

Just to be sure if you post the exact model I can double check and make sure there is not sort of key combination that disables it. But I am pretty certain the switch or the internal card is bad.
