problem establishing wireless connectivity with Netgear Wireless-G

I have a ComCast modem with an ethernet connection to my desktop PC.  I have set up and am trying to establish connectivity between a Netgear Wireless-G router and my laptop.  The laptop wireless card is working fine, it was working earler today via ICS through my desktop etc.  I configured the Wireless router using the setup wizard.  Here are the settings when I go into http://routerlogin:
Account Name WGR614v7
Hardware Version V7
Firmware Version  V2.0.23_1.0.23NA
 Internet Port
MAC Address  00:0c:41:e8:88:4c
IP Address  69.140.xx.xx
DHCP  DHCPClient
IP Subnet Mask  255.255.248.0
Domain Name Server
 68.87.73.242
68.87.71.226

LAN Port
MAC Address  00:1E:2A:72:CD:42
IP Address  192.168.1.1
DHCP  ON
IP Subnet Mask  255.255.255.0
Wireless Port
Name (SSID) gscherie
Region United States
Channel 11
Mode g and b
Wireless AP ON

When I try to connect to the wireless network I created from the laptop, however, it hangs and then says "connected', however, the address is a 169.254.xx.xx address which (I think) is an APIPA address and which reflects the fact that the laptop did not get an IP address assigned from the router. It also gives me the standard "limited or no connectivity" message and I can't access web pages.   Now, the router is configured for DHCP, "use router as DHCP server" is checked.  I do not understand what the problem is.   I already tried the reset function (i.e., unplugged both the modem and router, plugged in the comcast modem, waited several minutes, plugged in the router), exact same thing.  Incidentally, I also get this from my desktop.
I also thought it might have something to do with the comcast router not being configured for multiple address assignment, so I turned off my desktop PC and tried to connect through only the laptop. Still no luck.

Can anyone recommend some steps I could take to figure out what the problem is.  Start Free Trial
