Question

My G5 can't find Time Capsule drive

Asked by: Revolution9

I've got a Time Capsule back up drive hooked up to my Internet wired router with ethernet.  My laptop can see the Time Capsule over my wireless network.  However, my G5 (and I don't think it has an Airport card installed - how do I find out), can not see it.  My G5 is hooked up to the router as well.

What gives?  How can I see the Time Capsule over my G5?  I need step by step please.

The Time Capsule has four Ethernet ports, one labeled with a little round icon, the other three with icons that look like this:

  <-->

The group of three ports are the Time Capsule's LAN Ethernet ports. That's what you plug into your router's LAN port. The first port is for plugging directly into your upstream Internet connection.

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 02:34:58ID: 22509099

Okay, I switched ports, and now the Time Capsule is plugged into the router - into the <---> port of the Time Capsule.

Now, how do I mount it on my desktop so it is recognized by Time Machine?

and Thanks for your help!

by: packetguyPosted on 2008-09-18 at 02:42:56ID: 22509138

You don't mount it on your desktop. Just go into the Time Machine control panel and you should see your time capsule listed as an available backup device. Select it and click "Use for Backup".

You might have to reboot the Time Capsule first.

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 02:52:50ID: 22509176

Thanks -

I rebooted the Time Capsule.  When I open the Time Machine control panel and search for the drive - the airport utility starts scanning for wireless devices, and can't find the Time Capsule.

Help!

Try temporarily disabling Airport on your G5. This will  force it to look on your LAN for the Time Capsule box.

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 03:17:20ID: 22509294

How do I disable Airport?

Sorry for all the idiotic questions.

by: packetguyPosted on 2008-09-18 at 04:17:47ID: 22509616

Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Networking, then click on Airport on the left, then click the "Turn Airport Off" button on the right hand pane.

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 04:42:43ID: 22509750

There is no Airport on the left - no mention of Airport.

by: packetguyPosted on 2008-09-18 at 04:47:53ID: 22509775

Is there an Airport icon in your menu bar at the top right of the screen?

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 04:50:16ID: 22509789

No, just a <---> that opens the network preferences

by: Davejk88Posted on 2008-09-18 at 04:50:40ID: 22509796

If you're using OS X 10.4, AirPort will appear in one of the dropdown menus at the top of the networking preferences pane rather than on the left.

I've got OX X 10.5.4 - maybe I don't have an Airport card.

If that's the case, then how do I locate the drive?

Maybe this helps, this is my setup:

Cable Internet > Netgear Router> G5, Time Capsule, Vonage Box, Wireless Netgear Hub

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 05:11:20ID: 22509927

what if I connected the Time Capsule from its USB port directly to the G5?  Will I still be able to access it even though it is being accessed wirelessly by my G4 Powerbook (that clearly sees it and is backing up as we speak)

by: packetguyPosted on 2008-09-18 at 05:42:19ID: 22510151

No, USB is only for printers and hard disks.

Did you read the manual? Or did you just start plugging things in?

by: Revolution9Posted on 2008-09-18 at 05:43:53ID: 22510167

I read the manual.  I think I need an Airport card installed.
