Can the Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router be used strictly as an Access Point to boost the signal around the house?
I am considering buying a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router, and wanted to know if I can use it strictly as an access point so that I can improve signal strength throughout the house, or do I have to purchase an Access Point device specifically. The main router that I have now is a Netgear MIMO. From what I understand, an Access Point does NOT need to be physically wired to the main router in order to broadcast an internet signal -- please correct me if this is false -- because the whole point for me is to bypass running wires throughout the house.

Get the dd-wrt firmware for your device and your old wrt54g2 may act as a router, ap, bridge, repeater, ...
You would need a repeater to repeat the signal into other parts of your home/office.
But check on www.dd-wrt.com which device of the wrt-family of routers will be compatible before you buy one.
