Question

LinkSys WRT600N Wired/Wireless

Asked by: wlennon

Hi all, I have a WRT600N Dual Band Router, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, (A,G) and (B,G,N). I have the router upstairs and do not want to run a 75 ft cable to downstairs.

I want to connect my Dish Network VIP722 HD Turbo (480i, 720P, 1080i, and on some channels it broadcasts in 1080p), I also want to connect it to my Sony Blue-Ray DVD Player-BD-S550. (Both have Ethernet connections).

What would be the best way to do this tirelessly. Wireless G will work. Both of our Laptops get 5 out of 5 bars of reception downstairs in where my Home Theater is located.

Thanks

You can either buy a wireless bridge, or get a Linksys WRT54GL and run ddwrt firmware on it. You can set the WRT54GL to be a bridge and plug in the Dish and blu-ray player.

Hi chuckyh,

Would that be the DD-WRT v24 SP1 and to setup the WRT54GL as a bridge, and set it up on my PC first so I can access the online setup? Could I also use it as an Access Point or would a Bridge be better?

Hi wlennon,

You might want to take a look at powerline products, too.

They use the skin effect phenomena to let a 5GHz to 20GHz signal ride over your existing powerlines without interference from the AC power.

You connect a short patch cord from your network connection (e.g. a LAN port on your router) to a powerline unit plugged into an available receptacle (they do not work well plugged into powerstrips, as those often contain noise filters that will attenuate the powerline signal). Where you want to extend your network, plug in a 2nd powerline unit, and run a short cat5e patch cord to the new device.

Linksys - http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/PowerLine
D-Link - http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=533
Netgear - http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/HDXB111.aspx
ZyXEL - http://www.zyxel.com/web/product_category.php?PC1indexflag=20050804090200
et al

The Linksys units are the newest; Their old models were the PLE200 (PLK200 was a kit of two PLE200's).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Description=powerline shows 24 matches, but only the first 18 are powerline network products.

Hello Darr247,

I have seen powerline products for several years, but have never tried one. If I can get transfer rates up to 200 Mbps would be outstanding since there are not any wireless N access products other than USB, the Sony Blu-Ray unit needs as much throughput as possible for 1080p multimedia. Buy.com has the PLK300 for $148.99 and free shipping. Plus that would allow me to buy one more for the other VIP722 in the bedroom

The Dish HD VIP722 HD receiver comes with a 400 hour DVR, and I have added a USB WD750GB My DVR Expander. The receiver can use ethernet for faster downloads and multimedia.

I'll do some quick research.

Wesley

> If I can get transfer rates up to 200 Mbps would be outstanding

I think those advertised rates were obtained under ideal conditions that are often not present in the situations where you actually want to use them, but if you can get half that speed it would still be as good as in-wall 100baseTX and 3+times as fast as the best 54g wireless throughput.

by: wlennonPosted on 2009-01-14 at 12:21:02ID: 23377008

I went ahead and bought the PLK300 locally and for it's expandability to the other room(s).

As of this afternoon, I am getting 110 Mbps, doubt I would get that with 54G.

Thanks guys,

Wesley

> As of this afternoon, I am getting 110 Mbps, doubt I would get that with 54G.

That's about 30mbps faster than 100baseTX's throughput on cat5e, actually.  :-)

110 - 100 (Cat5e) = 30?  ;)

by: wlennonPosted on 2009-01-15 at 09:35:33ID: 23385706

Great job everyone,

Many thanks again...

by: Darr247Posted on 2009-01-15 at 10:57:36ID: 23386468

> 110 - 100 (Cat5e) = 30?  ;)

Yep. With frame overhead et al deducted, you're doing excellent if you can get 85Mbps.  :-)

54g wireless isn't capable of even 30Mbps, btw... 27Mbps is about the best physically possible.
http://www.oreillynet.com/lpt/a/4085
The draft-n devices I've played with typically double that; triple, if within 3m in the same room... that's barely as fast as 100baseTX. Though I specialize in wireless at the moment, I don't see wireless replacing the copper infrastructure any time soon. Nor free space optics replacing fiber. So I'll continue maintaining my electrician skills and licensing for now.

Sorry - didn't mean to type that much... just waiting for EE to come back up.  ;-)
