Vaio Wireless Device Switch Setting Utility doesn't show Bluetooth

I have just done a clean Vista Business install on a Vaio VGN-FZ11Z. I had previously downloaded the necessary drivers and utilities from the support Web site, and I started to install them one by one. There is one little utility called "Wireless Device Switch Setting Utility"  where you can enable or disable either Bluetooth or WLAN or both of them (image_1.jpg). I like this little utility very much and use it quite often, because I have different Bluetooth / WLAN setups at home and work, so I can enable / disable the related wireless functionality from a single neat interface without having to go through network settings or Device Manager.

I have a problem with this little utility. In the previous Vista installation there was a section on the utility labeled Bluetooth Device with a checkbox that allowed me to turn it on and off (image_1.jpg). Even though the official Bluetooth stack from Toshiba is installed, this section is missing on the utility, so Bluetooth isn't available as an option to enable or disable. There are only options to switch between 2.4 and 5 GHz LAN (image_2.jpg). I installed the Bluetooth stack first, then the utility, and vice versa, downloaded the latest updates, but none of them worked. It's as if the Bluetooth stack isn't installed at all, but it is; I can connect to Bluetooth devices, and access all the functionalities through the regular Bluetooth interface.

I don't think this is a compatibility issue as the original drivers didn't work together, either. I presume I need to install something else before I install these two or there is a specific order in which they should be installed, etc. I tried all possibilities and combinations, and none of them worked.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Do you have any suggestions? How can I see and enable / disable Bluetooth on Wireless Device Switch Setting Utility again?

What version of the utility did you have installed, and which version do you have installed now? 3.6?

I don't remember the previous versions of the utility and the driver, but I had never updated them, so they must be the original versions. The original version of the utlity is 3.6.00.14270, and the most recent one is 3.6.01.18210 which is the same on the link that you have provided in your post. I installed them both, neither of them works. There is no update for the Bluetooth stack, so I'm using the one that I downloaded from the support site, which can be found under FZ1_Drivers.zip.

There is no version information on the link, so I will download and have a look at it. BTW, those are XP downgrade drivers.

I do realize that, but maybe it is the only driver that works with the utility...

The Bluetooth driver that you sent the link for is newer than the recommended one for Vista although it's an XP downgrade driver! :-) But I have done some more research and concluded that the version of the driver or even the EXISTENCE of the driver doesn't matter. Here is how: I restored the original Vista Home Premium from the recovery partition, and saw that the utility is preinstalled on the OS image and the Bluetooth driver is installed during application recovery, so the utility CAN be installed before the driver. And it was working as expected even BEFORE the Bluetooth driver was installed, i.e. "Enable Bluetooth Device" was there before Bluetooth was installed. I uninstalled the Bluetooth driver just to make sure, it was still there.

I must be missing something else, but this utility used to work with Vista Business before, so there HAS to be a way to get it working. It's a minor issue; enabling or disabling Bluetooth and / or WLAN is just a couple of clicks away, but I liked the convenience of this little utility, so I will keep trying...

Got it!!! "Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device" driver has to be installed in order to be able to turn Bluetooth on or off from Wireless Device Setting Utility. The driver itself is not easy to spot; it resides in a folder named "SFEP" in FZ1_Drivers.zip (the collection of official drivers from Sony conveniently packed in a zip file). The device is listed under "Other Devices" as an unknown device after the initial Vista installation and the hardware ID is "ACPI \ SNY5001". To install the driver:

- Locate the device, right-click on it and select "Update Driver Software"
- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
- Locate the driver folder and select "Next"

The name of the driver file is "SonyNC.sys".
