how to extend Linksys WRT54G range with firmware upgrade

I've read several postings elsewhere about using 3rd party firmware to increase the physical signal strength of the Linksys WRT54G.  Once at some of the sites where the firmware is I either can't follow the instructions to load or even figure out which of the 5,000 files I need to download.  Does anyone have any suggestions for self executing firmware upgrades or better step by step instructions to overwrite and upgrade a WRT54G box.

I have flashed a couple of routers this month by following the instructions on http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page .  They are step by step and not at all complicated.
