Question

Extend a Airport Express with an Airport Extreme

Asked by: junglecom

Hi!

I have an apple airport express and I would like to use an airport extreme to extend the wireless network the express is putting out. Is there a way to do this?

Also do you guys know what the "Join my airport extreme to an existing wireless network" option does?

Also:

1) Open the Airport Admin Utility.

2) Open the Main Airport base station.

3) Click on the WDS tab.

4) Click the "Enable this base station as WDS" box and then select "Main Base Station"

5) Enter the MAC address of the Airport in your bedroom.

6) Save this and close the window (the Airport will reset)

7) In Airport Admin Utility, open the Airport in your room (I assume it is an express?)

8) Click on the WDS tab.

9) Check the same box and then select "Remote Base Station: from the drop down.

10) Enter the Main Airport ID (it's the MAC address).

11) Save and close (the Airport will reset)

Both Airports are now part of the same network

The airport express is the one connected to the cable modem. If i do the above to this one what will happen to my original settings? Will it still create a wireless network with WDS? Also would I have to change any settings on my computer?

Ok i have it set up as a WDS remote now. My problem is that I can only connect one wireless client to the remote airport at a time.

I need to connect 2, but can only get one IP. I can't see any option that will work.

There has to be something wrong with your config then. Check to see if it is setup to limit the number of connections. I believe this would be configured on the Main airport station.
