Question

How to connect to a wifi printer

Asked by: fcirillo

I have a standard Wifi home network, with one Notebook running Windows Vista and an HP Wifi printer (4 in 1).  In this Notebook I have made the complete software installation from the original printer CD.
Now, I want to connect an other Notebook, running Windows XP SP3, to the Wifi printer, but not making use the Wifi printer. This notebook is already connected to the Wifii network.
Please,  how this notebook can "see" the Wifi printer? If I use the setting "Add Printer/Network" I don't see the Wifi printer, which is not the case in the first notebook that was loaded from  the printer CD.
I don't want to load the complete printer software as this second notebook is used ocasionally in my home Wifi network
Tks

Try adding the printer manually by typing in the IP address.  ie. \\192.168.x.x

I would install it with the CD and a USB cable first, then go into Printers and Faxes, to the Ports tab in the Properties of the printer and see if the uPNP service found it (look below the USB ports there). If not, add a port and choose HP standard TCP/IP Port (if you don't install it from the CD, that option may not be available in Add Port).

My printer is HP Officejet J6420

by: Darr247Posted on 2009-09-21 at 11:25:43ID: 25385878

HP doesn't list an OfficeJet J6420. The closest one they list is a J6424. If that is what you have, the install procedure recommended by HP is to either use the CD or (preferrably) download the install file from their web site.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL25952/mp-66735-1/OJJ6424_Full_10.exe

That same file (dated 12/2008) is supposed to work for Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Starter, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (64-bit) and Microsoft Windows XP x64.

The J6400's *should* have an ethernet port next to the USB port (see attached) so you can connect it to your network without needing to connect to it ad hoc wirelessly to print. In that case, connect a standard cat5 network cable from that to a LAN port on your router, then follow the "Installing wired on XP" instructions.

If you want to confirm you have a J6424 before downloading that 200+MB file, go to http://www.hp.com/support on the computer that can already access the printer, select your country/region from the picklist or map, then click the Start Detection button.
