Question

Extending a wireless network?

Asked by: Ripla5

Hi,
I am looking at setting up wireless network, my problem is its in a large old house with a number of rooms.

The current solution uses an Orange Livebox (about 4 years old) which simply does not have strong enough signal coverage.

My thinking is to use an Airport Extreme as the DSL router and get a couple of Airport Express's to 'daisy chain' (extend) accross the house - Is this possible? and if so will the receving pc equipment autmatically switch to the stronger connection? Will there be any problems acheiving this?

The receiving equipment will not be MAC hardware, only a couple of PC's and a laptop, so if any better ideas for hardware please advise - I opted for MAC is it seems to be the easiest/best available.

Just throwing it out there. Have you considered just one router and replacing the antenna with a high gain antenna? Depends on how bigger house we are talking?

But to answer you question, Yes it will work. There is defiantly some config that needs to be done on all the airports - but its really quite easy.

Its fine that your not using apple hardware, Your network cards in your devices are usually set to roam to louder talking AP's/stronger automatically. But depending on the card, you can go into advanced settings of the device and modify the roaming aggressiveness etc.

Here is a blogg post of somone that did the same thing, except they went a little further. Should give you a good idea and understanding.

Thanks naykam, thats a very useful tutorial!

I never actually considered Hi-gain antenna but I was under the assumption these have to be directional and a station is required at the receiving end? This would be ok assuming it wouldn't need line-of-site...
