should read "WEP 40/128-bit Hex" first and then "WEP 40/128-bit ASCII"

The Mac sees the router fine when connected via its Ethernet port, and also when Airport is turned on, showing a strong signal and the correct router name, but the password given to me from Orange is not accepted.
I have tried the previous suggestion of adding a dollar sign before the password, without success. Anyone got any ideas please?

Thank you for your very rapid response! But now it is working!!
Incidentally, internet access does work when an ethernet cable is plugged in.
In fact, Orange originally plugged in another router yesterday, and the Mac worked with that while it was on. For some reason they changed it the same day and installed the 6090, and all then stopped working.
However, following your comments, I thought of checking the Mac's Keychain Access application, which is where the passwords are stored. Sure enough, the Orange router was there, along with the ORIGINAL password for the first router they installed. Airport was ignoring the password I was putting in, and inserting the first password itself. So I changed the password in Keychain Access and all was well.
So although your answer didn't directly help, it certainly help[ed point me in a different direction, so thank you for your time.

Have you checked that you have the security settings correct in the Airport configuration? I am not sure how you have the password on the 6090 but if its WEP and you have a hexadecimal number for the passcode the it should be set to "WEP 40/128-bit Hex" if its a word/passcode and its WEP then try "WEP 40/128-bit Hex" - you should also check to see if they are using WPA/WPA2 on this box for your passcode/authentication, in which case in the Airport config you should be using WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal.
Have you tried changing those options?
Failing that...
Can you get onto the router via the ethernet port? (i.e. when you are plugged into the ethernet from the 6090 can you bring up a web browser and get to the management interface, probably http://192.168.0.1 if its set up the same way as mine was)?
You can then log in and check the settings on the router and even change the passcode and security to ensure you have it all set correctly.
