Question

Internet Connection on computer

Asked by: cwhess

My main computer is connected by Ethernet to my wireless router. When I start the computer the internet connection works fine but after a while when I open a browser I get a blank page and cannot access any website until I restart. The network works fine with my laptop which is connected wirelessly and always works flawlessly. Any ideas?

What is listed in your routers IP tables for devices being used?

Could also be spyware killing your connection after a set time.  Running Combofix from bleepingcomputer.com

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

has often fixed odd internet connection issues for myself.

Yes I can ping outside sites.

I don't have access to my router IP table, it's password protected by someone else but I can get that tomorrow if you need it.

When you are experiencing the problem, does your network connection stay active in Windows?

A few things I would try:

1. As ArmyGroo suggested, combofix, but also I would try winsock fix located at http://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html

2. Try a different ethernet port on your router

3. Update the firmware on your router

Is DHCP enabled?
Is auto config enabled?

What is the IPv4 address on main computer and laptop..
what are their default gateways

Did you assign an IP to the computer? If so, lets set it back to DHCP, and once that is done. Run this command from a DOS Prompt. ipconfig /flushdns. Then reboot.

Let me know how that goes.
In case you dont know how to change to DHCP.
Click Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.
Right Click Local Area Connection, Click Properties.,
Highlight TCPIP, Click Properties,
Click on "Obtain IP Automatically

Click Apply, and OK
Reboot

I think I found the problem! TCPIP was not even installed. So I installed it and restarted and connection worked fine. Thanks for your comment camoIT!
