Question

How do I share a printer on an AT&T DSL connection?

Asked by: dlauseng

Gateway desktop connected via Ethernet cable to an AT&T wireless router/modem for Internet access.  Gateway laptop a couple of rooms away with wireless access to the Internet via the AT&T wireless router/modem.  USB printer connected to the laptop.  Can I configure a network using the AT&T wireless router/modem, or must I develop a separate home network with a router and wireless access point?

I attempted to connect a Linksys wireless access point to the AT&T wireless router/modem, but was unable to configure the network to share the USB printer connected to the laptop.

What operating system are you using on both?
Make sure both computers are on the same workgroup ,share the printer on the notebook and install a network printer on the desktop.
The first thing that needs to be done is to make the computers see each other and only then will you be able to share the printer.
Make sure the router is also a switch what model is it?

Click on Start, Run, type CMD in the box and hit enter.  (For Vista just Start then type CMD)
In the Black Box that pops up, type IPCONFIG.
The IP address will be listed, like 192.168.1.3 or the like.

Do the same thing on the other PC
The IP address will be listed, like 192.168.1.4 or the like.

(If the first 3 octets x.x.x.? don't match, reply with them here and I will instruct further.)

From the 192.168.1.4 PC type:
PING 192.168.1.3
You should get a REPLY FROM and not a REQUEST TIMED OUT

If you get a REPLY FROM, you should be able to share the printer by right clicking on the printer and selecting share.  Then go to the other PC and ADD NETWORK PRINTER.

The problem turned out to be McAfee.  It wasn't allowing the laptop computer with the attached printer port number access to the desktop computer connected to the AT&T wireless router/modem.  By the way, that AT&T device has an onboard wireless access point (obviously), and the onboard router's Ethernet ports function as any normal router.  Additional hardware, such as a switch, was not needed.  Thank you for your input!
