Wireless Connection

Hi,

I have a Broad band connection in My Room. and the problem is that there are  2 users who uses  internet simultaneously .But My ISP doesn't provide any Modem and its a direct Ethernet output to my laptop and they have assigned a static IP in my Laptop.

Kindly Suggest how can I have a Parallel connection so that all of us can Use Inter Net at the same time.

Also If I Install a Wireless Router in My Room and assign the static IP to the Wireless Router. Will I get the same Speed which I get in Direct Ethernet connection.  Say for Ex I have a Broad band connection of 512 Kbps and if i Install Wireless router for connectivity will I get the same 512 Kbps Speed while I Browse?

Often times the ISP will get your MAC address of your laptop and assign it to the IP address they give you.  This prevents you from sharing the connection.  However, there is a way around it, it's called spoofing the MAC.  So, get yourself a wireless router and assign your MAC and IP address to it.

Thanks for the Speedy response.

My ISP doesn't have any restriction on sharing the inter net connection Even they have suggested to use a router for Multiple connection. But my Doubt is if I install a Wireless Router Will I get The Same Speed of Browsing that I get while using wireless connection. I have this Doubt because Often I have read in many Places that the wi-fi routers supports only 54kbps.

So if I use wifi will i get the same speed that I get while browsing through Ethernet?

Well,

The wireless standard used by most of the wireless routers supports a maximum speed of 54 Mbps and 54 kbps as you have read, so your internet connection speed of 512 Kbps will not suffer because of this.

However, 3 users accessing the Internet simultaeneously will affect the connection speed available to you.

that's 54MBs, not kilobytes., so you should have no issues.  If you're concerned, just ensure you get a wireless router with wired connections on the back, you can run cables if need be around your place.  Your bottle neck is not going to be your router, it's the DSL connection, so you should have no issues.  Also, remember, the farther away you get from a wireless connncection the lower the speed.  So, if you're in the bedroom with the router, no problem if you move into the lilving room and you have cement walls, you will have a slight degradation in signal probably, depends where the door is.  If you have just drywall you should have no degradation.  I have old lathe/plaster walls and my router is at the back of the hosue, when I move the front of the house (which means about 4 walls, my signal drops substantially.

Wireless-G (802.11g wireless - the most common) is actually 54Mbps <-notice the small "b". this stands for bits, so that's 54megabits per second, not megabytes as in "MB/s". There are 8 bits in each byte.
Anyway, I have a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G router with a 4-port switch on the back. I recommend one of these as it is cheap, and handles all of your needs. If there are multiple users accessing the internet through the wireless connection, the 512Kbps speed will be shared between the users depending on usage.
