Problem setting up Wifi on an HP Deskjet 2540

Hi,

Trying to set up wifi on a deskjet 2540.

When connected by USB cable it works fine.

When connected to the HP Deskjet own wifi - the wifi setup sees the printer and assigns it an IP address of 192.168.231.1.

When connected to a small network of one laptop and one PC, both running Windows 7 and using a BT Business Hub 3 as DHCP server, the wifi setup from the laptop sees no printers. A printout shows the wifi is ok and the IP 192.168.1.70.

If we ping 192.168.1.70 it says it is unreachable, so I am assuming a firewall problem.

Windows Firewall is disabled by McAfee Internet Security's firewall and I turned this off for an hour, but still no printer is seen.

HP support say it appears to be the BT Hub and this should be set to Disable Auto Channels, and manually set to channel 1, 6 or 11, and frequency set to 801.11b or 801.11g.

I never come across a router causing a problem like this and the problem reminds me of a recent problem where a scanner was reinstalled after Norton 360 was put on, and could no longer scan. All roads led to 360 and after disabling the antivirus and firewall it still wouldn't scan, Norton said it's not a Norton problem. So I removed 360 completely and immediately the scanner worked even without a reboot.

The only thing stopping me from removing McAfee is I don't have the installation files or product key.

Any thoughts?

Some Wi-Fi routers have extra security settings where Wi-Fi stations are isolated from each other. Here's hire tp-link describes it:
Enable AP Isolation - Isolate all connected wireless stations so that wireless stations cannot access each other through WLAN. This function will be disabled if WDS/Bridge is enabled.

However, every brand will use a different name or description for this function. I hope it's just as obvious the bt hub.

To test it in another situation (purely for testing as it's quite inconvenient). Install virtualrouterplus on one laptop (thereby making the laptop share the wired network through it's Wi-Fi, acting as an access point). Now connect the printer to this new access point. On the laptop, you can bite probably print. Probably other laptops as well if they also connect to this new access point. Now you know for sure it's the bt hub causing this problem.

if we ping 192 168.1.70, the printer IP, we get unreachable
Have you tried the troubleshooting tips here http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/wireless-printing-center/troubleshooting.html

Select Your printer has never worked over the network
I've requested that this question be closed as follows:

Accepted answer: 0 points for bill2013's comment #a40052828

for the following reason:

"Do you have a wireless N connection? Hp does not support N connection. So you need to set the router to b,g,n on a 2.4 ghz channel."

You meant ".....set the router to b or g only...." and you're right. This allowed the laptop to install the printer wireless using a USB cable was in place. As soon as the cable was removed, the printer disappeared.

After 3 attempts, with and without McAfee firewall on I called HP and after 90 minutes and downloading the latest software their technician got it working.

A lot of work for a £30 MFP.
For second time I have accepted an experts answer and it says I am closing the question.
Glad you got it going.
