Question

How to "extract" a ".bin" file, please!

Asked by: marylyn27

I goofed. I'd originally posted a question here thinking that the file I was about to receive was an ".iso" file. some very helpful people here said i could use WinImage to "extract" the files from the .iso format (i don't have a CD writer, so I need to have the original files...not an image file).

as it turns out when i used WinRar it was a .bin...NOT an .iso. now what do i do? is there any program out there that will allow me to convert this .bin file to the original files???

thank you for your patience with my easy questions :))

This may be a long shot, but...

You could simply rename the file to whichever type you wanted, and then open it with WinRar/WinZip/WinImage etc.
(save a spare copy first, just in case :-)

Let me know if this works for you.

You should have the .CUE file also. There is stored info about that .bin file there. If you do, use a small utility called BinChunker.

If ya don`t have binchunker, ask me, I`ll put it somewhere, where you can download it from (it`s only about 230Kb).

If you don`t have the CUE file (just BIN file), simply use WinImage instead (I also can provide). But WinImage cannot extract audio files from disk images (in case they contain them), only regular data files.

Dear Darkriser,

Yes, you're right...there are 2 files...a huge .bin file and a very small .cue file. So, I guess I need that BinChunker program? If you can help me get it, that'd be great. I really do appreciate your help :)Marylyn

I`ve uploaded it here:

http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Island/1098/Files/binchunker.zip

Just extract it and run the only one .exe file. In the File menu click Load Cue and select your cue file. You will be displayed a list of all tracks (audio and data) existing in the .bin file. Then simply select desired tracks and click Action->Convert (scanning tracks before converting may also be useful).

Actually, BinChunker can only convert BIN images to data tracks (regular .ISO files) and audio tracks (.WAV files). If you need extract the files inside the image (bin or iso), use WinImage instead (but winimage CAN NOT extract audio files, for this purpose use binchunker). You`ll find it here:

http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Island/1098/Files/WinImage5.zip

Extract it and run Winimage.exe. Click File->Open and select Files of Type (in the bottom) to All Files (*.*). Then select your bin (or converted iso) file and choose Image->Extract. That`s all...

Btw. before extracting the bin file, open the cue file (in Notepad) and check the first line. There should be the path (not required) and the name of the corresponding bin file. Only check, whether it`s correct.

....and feel free to ask in case of problems...

A very good program is bin2iso.exe, This program will convert a bin file to an ISO image, very usefull if the cue file is missing. If you do not have a burner you can allways mount it on a virtual CD drive. I have put it up here for you.

Forgot to mention, you can also open in iso file with UltraISO 7.55 ME which is available on a trial download.

Try Daemon Tools:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/index.php
It will allow you to mount the .bin image as a "virtual drive" and then you can pull the files off to your hard drive.  Basically it is taking the image and making the computer think that the .bin file is actually a cd loaded into a drive.
