hello.

Im not sure about this but I have the same problem before, and it gets worse when running all these apps together at the same time. But after I installed the Service Pack 3( Now there's Service Pack 4 ) and adjusted the size of my initial Pagefile size to max size, it got better.
Perhaps u could try it.

usually this means that someone has installed distributed software such as SETI on your computer.

goto the task manager ctl+alt+del and find the task that is using the most in the % coloum

if you post it here i can tell you what it is

by: yabelsonPosted on 2003-07-04 at 01:53:22ID: 8855165

hi.
first of all - the Task Manager itself takes a big toll from your cpu : 2-7 % (!!).
further more - its no wonder your cpu shows 100 %.the apps you are running are big cpu consumers.
try closing them and see how your computer usage drops.
another thing - look at your task bar and check what apps are running in the background.
more than you'll know, there are apps that take your cpu usage to new hights..

Check whether this happens in the safe mode....
If it doesn't happen in the safe mode...
Try disabling all the services and start in the normal mode....
It is definitely one of the windows services which is causing the problem

by: ged325Posted on 2003-07-04 at 22:34:10ID: 8859535

could also be a virus.  Try scanning it and see if it comes up with anything.  Else, format the system, and see if that solves your problem.

Okay, I ahve experianced this problem before on xp and on 2k, it is 100% software. It can be caused by a few things, such as the indexing service that windows uses to keep track of all the files on your disk, but this usually doesn't last long (if you wnat to get rid of that by the way right-click each hard-drive and deselect the "allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching on this disk"

The main cause I have found is actually a problem with the way explorer handles avi files! Let me explain a bit, it you have an incomplete avi file, or a damaged avi file, explorer will read it frame by frame to determine it's properties (such as video size, length etc..)
You can confirm this by starting the task manager next time it happens, I know it will takes ages to open but be patient! if you see that explorer.exe is the process using all your CPU do the following:

1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

After restarting the problem should be solved. **note** You won't have any video properties any more if you right-click and avi file, but I'm sure you never use it!

If the process is not explorer.exe then there are a few other problems that could cause the same symptoms. Some people suggest that the print spooler of all things was the cause!

You could also have a keyboard issue, some logitech keyboards have some driver issues which can cause the 100% cpu usage. Also physical damage could case the problem (which could mean continuous interrupt requests and hence 100% CPU utilisation)

Anyway, hope this helps!

p.s. keep us posted! :o)

Also, one thing I would like to add to my previous post, update windows 2k to service pack 4, then apply all the latest critical hot fixes from windows update, if it is a windows driver issue this might fix it.

Service pack 4 for windows 2000:

Is your video card "on-board" or a separate card (i.e. AGP, PCI)?  I have seen systems that choke because of graphic strains when there is not a standalone video card.

by: tgtcat69Posted on 2003-07-14 at 10:50:22ID: 8919213

this is no way related to hardware, so don't bother changing any more cards and whatever. seeing as how we have not heard from you, i'm going to reiterate above comments 1) scan for viruses...their trade mark is high cpu and hard drive utilization.  Load in safe mode and see if you get the same problems.  you can try upgrading to sp4 but i don't think you will see a difference in performace as these patches are usualy for security.

by: TheLANLordPosted on 2003-07-14 at 17:41:09ID: 8921734

Thats a very bold statement to say that "it is in no way related to hardware". I have seen this same thing happen because of hardware related problems, which I noted by saying "I have seen........" I made no guarentees... guarentees which you seem to be making - how can you be positive?

512MB RAM should be enough for all those apps together
Do you perhaps use ICQ? Try killing it if you do.

I have an AMD 1800+ Win 2000, 512mb (2100 on a 2700 board) and regularly use multiple productivity wares such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Director, Premier and After Effects. I do have a heft cooler on the chip though (CoolerMaster heatpipe -I dont over clock my system & the chip temp is constant @39c), but theres a limit to any system running multiple apps at any one time. If you need to use tons of progs at a time then maybe you should seriously upgrade your ram. -I have 3dMax also, but id never run that on the system whilst the other apps were in motion, especially if they were running tasks. Macromedia wares tend to suck less out of your system then some Adobe programs, and Photoshop is optimised for Dual CPU's but its does work ok if your running it and say two other apps, you will deffinitely notice a significant slow down in your system.
Really, you should based on what youve said in your question, be running about a gb or ram -basically as much as you can fit on your board.

Are you logged on as the admin?  or a user?  The reason I ask is once here at work I ran into a problem like that.  A computer was just dog slow and when I looked at its usage it was pegged.  It turns out I had logged in as admin, and installed a program, then rebooted and logged in as a user.  The programs installer left a program to run on the next start up that was to finish the process, and it needed admin rights, because it did not have them it would hang up.  Once I signed back in as admin it finished and the comptuer was fine.

Hi,
I saw a lot of feedback, but I didn't go through them.  Try to minimize the number of running apps.  Does your pc still hang?

Do as Yabelson says!
Right Click on the taskbar and goto task manager and on the Processes tab click on the Mem Usage bit at the top and this will sort out the items using the most amount of memory at that particular time. Now if you need to you can simply right click on the offending item and hit End Process -but note that you will lose any unsaved documents which that particular program is using, this is not a very safe method of closing a program, neither is using the X inthe right hand top corner, you should use the File>Close menu to close programs as they can sometimes reside in the memory after you have closed them via the X.
Really its just a good way of seeing which programs are the most offensive to your system.

Sounds like too many items running in startup.  MSCONFIG will not work on win 2000. so you will have to go thru the registry.  H_Key Local machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version?Run and then delete the items that are running uneeded in the background.

Having a lot of programs dont necesaarly mean 100% cpu usage. Because the pgorams could be just open, not doing anyting.

It looks like a viurs or spyware on your system. I suggest you run a virus scan using the latest virus definitons and scan for spayware using Spybot search and destroy.

It does not look like a hardware issue. Also you may want to do a clean install of Windows.
