Laptop hard drive to Desktop.

I spilled a drink on my laptop and my system board and power were damaged to the point where is was smarter to buy a new computer. This time I am buying a desktop; now the question...

How do I connect my laptop hard drive (which I saved from the laptop) to a desktop? I have heard somethings about IDE converters... I do not understand how the desktop will access the laptop hard drive if the laptop hard drive was both a 'C' and 'D' partitioned drive and my desktop will be a 'C' drive. I just want to get certain MS Word documents and Digital camera pictures. I am sure this is an easy question for most, but I am at a loss and
