The shortcut key "T" will give you the type tool. However, it is possible that the text in your Illustrator file is no longer editable text, though. That's especially possible if you use that file to send to printers for use in printed anything (the font gets messed up and most printers find it easier to just ask for text made into shapes).

If that is the case, you may have to delete the old words and make a whole new text section. If you can't select the text you want to delete, try going to "Object-->unlock all" and try again.

To type in text hit "T" on your keyboard with the file open and your cursor should change to the text prompt (as if you're editing in word or highlighting text on a website). Left click on the graphic and it will turn the space you clicked to a blinking cursor which no longer moves with the mouse. Type what you want to say. Edit the font through the box found at the menu"windows->Type->character"

This file is an AI file that I tried to zip up.

However it says that "The extension of one or more files in the archive is not in the list of allowed extensions: Logo (orange all).ai"

I guess I cannot upload it to you. All I can say is I cannot edit the text at all. It is not a legacy file and it is not a

The text may also be an embedded Jpeg, Tif, Gif, etc.

Send the file to djc664 at hotmail.com and I'll take a look for you.

I can walk you through the process of how to do that pretty easily (probably with a link to a basic how-to).
I could probably tell why you can't edit the current text in a few seconds after opening the file, so I was offering to do that for you, but I'm not looking to do design work for anyone at the moment.

Hi ruavol2

If you want to upload the file simply change the extension to .txt and let us know that you have done that.

Otherwise follow Acetaminophen's advice in his first post, it is better for you to explore the answer with his guidance.

Ace, if you do make the changes for the asker please document these here as well so it becomes a valuable answer for future look up.

best regards
capt.

I did not know that renaming it to a txt was safe. I was afraid that practice was detrimental to the file structure but if you say it is alright. Here it is. It is again an ".ai" file for Adobe Illustrator CS3. Please let me know what you think can and cannot be done and thank you very much for the help.

Are you sure this does not screw the file up?When I changed it to .txt it says the file may become unstable?

by: captainreissPosted on 2008-12-30 at 15:23:34ID: 23267110

The upload worked fine and the file opens OK.

The problem that you have is that the file contains only outlined text. That means that the author/designer has used Type=>create outlines to convert all text to objects, hence there is no editable text left.

The only option is to recreate the strapline with new text and the same font or a similar italics serif font.

Follow Acet's advice to do so.

Changing the extension will not corrupt any file unless you try to open it as whatever you change the extension to (i.e. if you tried to open your AI file in Notepad). If all you do is send the file in email or post it on the web and whoever at the other end changes the extension back before they open it, there should be no problems at all.

For clairification between my instructions and Captainreiss's help (thanks for that, btw!), when he says "Outlines", I said "Shapes" in the first paragraph. Outlines is the proper term, in this case, thought Shapes is used in Illustrator to refer to what the "Outlines" are made of.

Confusing enough yet? :)

Your main issue going forward is probably having the correct Font file installed on the computer you are doing this editing on. Do you know what the name of the font they used is?

I will, however, expand on how you would recreate the drop shadow look they did. Keyboard Shortcuts will be in (_):
1. First, you're going to need to have the Tools, Character and Appearance windows open. They can be found, if they are not open already by default, under Window-->Tools, Window-->Appearance &  Window->Type->Character (Ctrl+T). Also note that you can hide and make reappear your windows by pressing the Tab button!
2. Use your Text tool (T) to type out the new awesome slogan you chose. It doesn't have to be the right color or font quite yet. Press (Ctrl+Enter) when you're finished with the words. This will exit you out of the Text entry and surround your text with sizing window controls.
3. Now, on the Tools window, you have two color squares overlapping each other near the bottom of the window. The one on the left is the fill color and the one on the right is the line color. You'll notice that the color shown matches the color of the font right now (probably black). If it is not "above" (which means active) the right side one, left click on it once to bring it to the fore.
4. Once you have the Fill color "active" select the Eyedropper (I), This changes the cursor to an eyedropper. Hover over the Orange in the middle of the "REPORT" at the top and left click. This will change the fill to the exact Orange color as the other parts.
5. Go to the Character Window and change the Font and Font Size to what you think looks good. Font Style on the file you provided was Italics, which you will want to set as well.
6. Select the Selection Tool (V) and use that to move the words into place, line up with the logo above and try out new fonts and sizes.
7. Once you are happy with placement, hit (Ctrl+C) to copy the words and select Edit-->Paste In Back (Ctrl+B). This will look like nothing happened, because it is directly in back of what you had selected. Press the down arrow and the right arrow keys one time each. You will see the font stagger out down and below!
8. Now select the Eyedropper once again and this time click on the black "shadow" of the letters above. BING! you have a drop shadow.
9. Note: the arrow keys will move in Increments sized to how zoomed in you are. The closer you're zoomed, the smaller the increments. That's because it's based on size of your screen space, and that is smaller the closer you are. To "fine tune" the amount the shadow sticks out, use the magnifying glass [holding alt will change to zoom out] or (Ctrl++) and (Ctrl+-) to zoom in and out of your file.
10. Once you're done and happy, you'll want to SAVE A COPY! and create outlines of the new slogon with Type-->Create Outlines.
