The shortcut key "T" will give you the type tool. However, it is possible that the text in your Illustrator file is no longer editable text, though. That's especially possible if you use that file to send to printers for use in printed anything (the font gets messed up and most printers find it easier to just ask for text made into shapes).

If that is the case, you may have to delete the old words and make a whole new text section. If you can't select the text you want to delete, try going to "Object-->unlock all" and try again.
To type in text hit "T" on your keyboard with the file open and your cursor should change to the text prompt (as if you're editing in word or highlighting text on a website). Left click on the graphic and it will turn the space you clicked to a blinking cursor which no longer moves with the mouse. Type what you want to say. Edit the font through the box found at the menu"windows->Type->characte
