The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Had a USB Belkin Flip KVM with a PS/2 keyboard (and usb adapter) .. computers could not see the keyboard.  Curious as to why?

This is my first question and it's mostly academic since it happened a few years ago.  Sorry if the details are fuzzy and I apologize if fuzzy details makes it difficult to answer the question.

My desktop (computer one) came with a PS/2 keyboard and a PS/2 to USB converter.  The keyboard worked fine when plugged directly into the computer's USB port.

Enter the USB Belkin Flip KVM.
http://www.belkin.com/flip/

So I plugged my PS/2 keyboard with USB adapter in and computer one would not see the keyboard.  When trying to "flip", the keyboard was not seen on the second computer. Flipping back, as you would expect, computer one could not see the keyboard.

Both computers are running Windows XP.  Computer One is running Windows XP Media Center.  Computer Two running Windows XP Pro.

What would have caused this to fail?

I am interested in hearing more nitty gritty details about translations of PS/2 to USB protocol and why it would work when directly plugged in but not work with the KVM.

I wasn't sure where to rate this since it is a somewhat difficult question because it requires some detail, but it's not difficult in that I'm just looking forward to hearing what the experts have to say.  I did try to google the research and it was hard to find discussion about this specific issue.

And I was reminded of this issue because I was in conversation with a friend last week who said he had the same issue awhile back with the IOGear 2-port USB KVM, he also took the easy way out and bought a USB keyboard, but was also curious as to what had happened and why it didn't work.

Thanks Experts in advance!  Hope you can satisfy my curiosity and my friend's curiosity!

Ben
