There is a 'Fn' key which should select the numeric and special characters which are on some of the alphabetic keys - strangely it is acting in reverse - I have to hold it down to get the letters, typing normally produces the special characters.

I had a similar problem with a samsung netbook, even had the keyboard out thinking it was some kind of hardware fault, kendal hit the nail on the head with the last comment... i dont really know what the benefit of alternate numeric keys is on smaller keyboards without a separate numeric area really, suspect this problem has caught a few people out. Easy to accidentally switch numlock on then the keyboard wont work as usual on the 7890, UIOP, and JKL + M keys

Have you tried uninstalling the keyboard from device manager (start, run, type devmgmt.msc <hit enter>), then rebooting, then seeing if there is any difference?
If not - then you may need to load a separate driver for the keyboard - or perhaps there is a cmos option to keep the Fn key on all the time...
