Touchpad barely working on Dell XPS 1530 reformatted to Win XP

Asked by erinch in Mice / Keyboards, Windows XP Operating System, General Laptop

I successfully reformatted my new XPS and have got the XP drivers working.

But the touchpad is really squirrelly. I'm using the Dell ALPS driver, version 7.1.102.7, dated 8/24/07.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice.
Specifically the left-click button keeps stopping working for 5 minutes or so. I have to right click and open to get a folder to open. Nothing happens at all when I left-click on the taskbar.
The cursor will still move, and highlight a selected area, but using the left-click button won't do anything.

After about 5 minutes, it will start to function again. But when I move the cursor over any folder name which could be renamed, it highlights it as if I intended to rename it, and the left-click function goes away again.

I've disabled scrolling and "touch-check" in the touchpad settings to try to isolate the problem, and it still exists.

Any ideas?
