Safe mode - tap F8 as it boots. Then roll back update.

is it possible to remote desktop to the system?  reinstall your drivers that way.

Cannot do safe mode, as keyboard does not work, so no way to depress F8

(without my knowledges, they went to xp recovery console
told it to do repair
went to nvidia, said did not pass logo testing, but how to hit  yes or no?  So this is where we are now.  Suggestions on how to proceed?  will it time out?

You might try a Repair.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
A Repair is not designed to overwrite data but you should take precautions.
Additionally, while a Repair may correct the issue it will require that you reinstall your most current Service Pack as well as the Hotfixes that accompany it.

Seems like the repair console is not allowing use of the keyboard?  Suggestions?

can you use any Remote Desktop software on it?  Dameware do a push-able client installation, as do LogMeIn.

I had the same fault myself - here's my Q on it:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_24396121.html

I tried a PS/2 to USB converter - some say it worked for them, but not for me:
ditto for a PCI card to give 4 more USB ports.
Punky's suggestion in my Q about the PS2 Extender never went anywhere - I think this is just a device to use Cat5 to extend a PS2 keyboard and mouse...

Phototropic found that one particular model of mouse/keyboard in one set of ports would work for him, but I never managed to get to this magic combination.

Are there options in your BIOS for Legacy USB?  They may help in the Recovery Console.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-09-02 at 19:16:15ID: 25247378

The keyboard should work while you still haven't loaded the Windows OS thus allow you to reach the Safe Mode.

If it isn't allowing you it could be that you have changed a setting in the BIOS.....

OK, the folks had already started a windows xp (FIRST"R") recovery, which reinstalls windows.  Tried putting in the disk, accepting the license and moving to the second R to repair, but said since they had already started the recovery, it had to proceed.  Decided to let it as I had backed up the data.  Now the problem is, the same one.  even after letting it proceed with a reinstall, I am to the point where it needs interation "regional and language options" and can go no farther because neither keyboard or mouse are avaialable. It is like the usb is totally dead, no lights or anything.  They are operational going into bios etc, but why dead in windows reinstall?  This is the Dell Optiplex 320 with no ps2 ports...
please help, need to put this behind me and get it back to work!

Thanks,
Dave

burrcm:
I think that is the only solution, going through the windows install process does not work, as I am hung up with needed keyboard and mouse access.  WHY are the drivers not installed during the process of reinstalling windows?

This is a Dell Optiplex 320, I only have the Winxp "Dell restore disk" that came with, will doing a format and reinstall with this light up the keyboard so I can download the rest of the drivers (or enable me to access a usb stick or rom with them on it?  Please advise asap, this needs done this AM.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, I ask you again:

The keyboard should work while you still haven't loaded the Windows OS ...If it isn't allowing you it could be that you have changed a setting in the BIOS..... Please reset the BIOS to defaults...

by: captelcomPosted on 2009-09-04 at 08:10:32ID: 25260420

Keyboard works fine in bios, just not once windows gets involved.

Here is where I am at the moment,

" I think that is the only solution, going through the windows install process does not work, as I am hung up with needed keyboard and mouse access.  WHY are the drivers not installed during the process of reinstalling windows? "

Should I just power off and out of this and do a bios defaults?   Or do that and reformat etc...  keep in myind we are stuck in the middle of windows setup!

Many thanks!! Dave

Ok.... If your keyboard and mouse are being recognized in the BIOS they should be working when you do a clean install of Windows.... Now, if they don't, there could be several reasons:

1. Are they the Original Mouse and Keyboard that came with this computer?

2. If they are not: Are they USB? If they are USB which is why I think you mean in your post.... Do you have a PS2 Mouse and Keyboard (the ones that plug into the Green and Purple sockets on the back of your computer)? If so...try installing Windows using the PS2 mouse and keyboard and after the OS is installed you can then switch them to USB.

3. Format the Hard drive to make sure any remnants of the failed installs are gone.

4. Let me know how it goes...

by: captelcomPosted on 2009-09-04 at 08:48:46ID: 25260763

They Are a dell keyboard, MS mouse, not original but common enough.  No this computer does not have PS2 Ports, the morons...
Dell Optiplex 320

OK will shut down, format drive, and reinstall    any more tips, thrown them at me, was trying to avoid that though I think I got the data we needed.

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-09-04 at 08:53:09ID: 25260818

Don't forget to RESET the BIOS to defaults...

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-09-04 at 08:55:43ID: 25260848

Also....if possible...try NOT to delete the 1st hidden partition (it's a very small one about 10MB and should be at the top)..... it's good to keep because the Dell Diagnostic's get updated to it. Otherwise....in the future you will need to run the diagnostics from a CD...

Ok We b formatting and starting over with fresh install.  WIll cry if that does not work.  Still not all that happy it came to that, hope I got all their data!

by: captelcomPosted on 2009-09-15 at 04:52:01ID: 31623880

In the end, the reformat and reinstal worked just fine.  Just real annoying to have to do that due to a driver problem, Oh, and the fact that the users could not wait for me to look at it, but had to start a REINSTALL instead of a Repair.... oh well.  Thanks for the tips, I learned some new things that will help for the next problem that comes my way!
