Question

Smudged printing on a HP Deskjet 692C

Asked by: daf0316

I have two HP Deskjet 692C printers that have begun to smudge when they print in black only.  Color still works fine.  I have tried everything.  I have cleaned, aligned, wiped on the cartridge print head with a cloth and also (as suggested by an Office Depot employee) an alcohol swab.  NOTHING works!  I have tried new print cartridges, I have used a print cartridge from another printer that is working fine . . . still the smears.  What can I do?  Thanks, Daphne Hogan

On most HP inkjets there is a rubber piece on the far right which wipes off the cartridge.  This can sometimes collect gobs of ink and transfer it to the print cartridge.  Check this piece out and clean if neccesary

In the carridge that holds the ink cartridges, there are some small tabs at the bottom.  These ride just above the paper.  Take out the cartridges and look down from the top.  You will see them all the way at the bottom of the carridge towards the back of the printer.  These tabs frequently get gummed up with ink and paper dust.  Clean them from the bottom with q-tips soaked in water.  Water will disolve the ink better than alcohol swabs.
Just a hint...  with the power on, open the cover so that the cartridges move into the position to be changed.  Unplug the power cord with the top open.  This will unlock the print cartridge carridge and allow you to move it back and forth.

I recently fixed a 690 with a similar problem. I adjusted the rail that holds the cartridge. The gap between the cartridge and the paper was too small. The cartridge was rubbing on the ink before it dried and making streaks across the page.

daf0316,

This is a very common problem, I used to have a DJ693 that exactly the same problem.

The cause of this problem is that the ink used by this printer is a lint magnet.  You use your printer long enough and the ink biulds up on the bottom of your cartridges and lint gets stuck on that ink and that lint then causes streaks.

Actually it's the ink build up on the color cartridge that attracts the most lint, so I'm guessing you only cleaned the black cartridge, right?  Clean the color cartridge nozzles (with water only, alcohol dries out the ink and shortens cartridge life) and it should take care of it.

There are two solutions for this problem from HP:

Get the cleaning kit for a nominal charge (It works like a charm, but they used to send it out for free which is when I got it.) by calling 888-447-0022. The part number for the HP Cleaning Kit is 88698-72925, option 210.  Or you can order it online here:

https://hpckps.startek.com/usa/

You can clean the printer yourself following the directions on this page:

http://www.officejet-support.com/dj600/clean.htm

This is probably your answer, but post again if cleaning fails to resolve the problems.

Cleaning is the answer. It's not so much the print head you clean but the underside of the plastic carriage that the cartridge fits into. Some of the lint collected there can be quite stubborn to remove.

I'm kind of blown away here, noticing that the original question date here is the year 2000.

Looks like Computer101 will likely need to finalize this since Asker appears to have left the scene.
