Question

HP 1220C with JetDirect EX error

Asked by: wesgarrison

HP DeskJet 1220C on LAN.
JetDirect EX connected via Ethernet. Static IP 10.0.0.103 assigned.
Printer connected via parallel cable to JetDirect box.

Printer prints test pages from printer.
Printer accepts raw input on 10.0.0.103:8000, so ethernet communication is working.
For instance, if I browse to http://10.0.0.103:8000  the printer prints out the HTTP request.

Printer prints test/diagnostic page from JetDirect box to printer.

The Web JetAdmin software that can connect to the JetDirect box and give diagnostic
information.  I used this (and other methods) to create a print queue, but a test page
from merely appears in the queue and is removed, but no result on printer.

Have you tried printing using the Generic/Text Only driver?  This is the only known way to print without using the fix below:

The JetDirect EX has issues detecting the proper parallel mode settings when used in conjunction with a DeskJet 1220C.

To change the parallel mode settings in the JetDirect EX via Web JetAdmin:

- Open HP Web Jetadmin and select the Print Server name in the list of available devices or use the Quick Find field to find a specific IP address.
- Select to highlight the printer and select Open Device or double-click the printer.
- Select Configuration.
- Select Device.
- In the Parallel Mode setting change to Centronics (preferred) or Bidirectional.
- Select Apply
- Unplug power from JetDirect then plug back in to initialize the new settings.

Note: If you have any computers connected to the network via AppleTalk, they will NOT be able to print under this setting.  There is no known workaround for this issue.

I have not tried using the Generic/Text Only driver.
I'll give it a whirl.

I've already tried this fix.  Neither Centronics nor Bidirectional modes solved the problem.

I have no HP USB cable, or I would try that to see if it's a printer problem or JetDirect problem.
I may just have to try plugging the parallel cable into my server to see what happens.

the issue here is not with your jetdirect box, but rather wiotht he 1220c, is suspect that you will encounter this issue with other jetdirects also...

basically the 1220c printer does not have a standard printer mib -  it is slightly off standard... however there is no known way to counteract this.. but if you upgrade the firmware of your EX to 08.40 it should helpo the JD read the printer settings properly...

Also what type of port are you using to proint to this device -  standard tcp/ip, lpr, dlc/llc, ipx/spx what????

if upgrading the firmware doesn't help.

take the power out of the printer, remove the cartridges, and power back on, then insert the cartridges witht eh pritner on adn the jd connected...

then power cycle the printer again...

hope this helps...
