Question

HP 1055CM Plus configuration

Asked by: Martin_C

I am setting up an HP 1055CM Plus printer and am having problems with the setup.  I followed the setup CD and it created a port for the printer, and installed the drivers.  I then get an error when I try to rpint a test page.  If I manualy create a TCP/IP port and set the printer up on that, I am able to print a test page, but if I send some documents the will spool, be recieved by the printer, then not print at all.

Any ideas?

I am running 2003 server with XP and 2000 clients

Are you sending the test print from the server and the normal prints from the Win2000 clients?

Have you installed Win2000 drivers in the XP Server? You have to do that....

I was trying to send the test prints from both the server and clients.  I have gone the route of using my manually created IP and printing thatway way.  Most things are going OK now, but I find it quite slow.  It will spool quickly in the computer, but take about 5 minutes to start printing.  On our old 750 we could send and it would print almost immediatly.  Are their any settings I could play with to try to improve this?

The only 2 sets of drivers provided are for the NT line (NT4, win2k) and the 95-98 line.  Their is nothing for xp (NT drivers work though) and certainly nothing for server 2003).  I find HP's support quite outdated and feabel.  The manual was put together in 1998 and the newest drivers are from 2002.  For a product that is supposed to be new, I feel that HP should realy have it together enough to keep these things up to date.

I have heard other people comment in the same way as you about the speed of the 1055: "why should we upgrade if our old 750 is faster?"

A direct TCP/IP connection is fractionally faster than going via a server, as there is then no need to create a copy (actually 2 copies) of the print file on the server. If you are using a server it does not really matter what driver you use there, as the server will only be used to spool the print file to the printer. The print file itself is created by the driver installed on the workstation. Of course, if you wish to use the server to install the driver onto the workstations, then the server has to have the correct driver and version for every workstation.
