Question

What is the name of the 5si printer?

Asked by: AbacusOnsite

Hi Experts,

I have a 5si on the network.  I can telnet into it and see quite a few settings, including the HOSTNAME.  But, I can't find the printer name anywhere.  I also can't see the printer when I try to browse the network from any Windows machine.  When I try to add the printer in Windows it wants a \\HOSTNAME\PRINTERNAME format.

Oh yeah, when I have the 5si print a dump of the settings, I can see an "AppleTalk" name, but nothing else related to printer name.  I tried using the AppleTalk name for the printer name, but the Windows box can't see the printer.

Any suggestions?

Go to the printer and print out a configuration page. The printer name should appear on the IO section along with the IP address.

Both on my configuration page (in the HP MIO 1 section), and on page 4-12 of the 5si manual, I do not see anything listing the printer name.

I see the hostname, IP address, gateway, subnet mask, etc.... but, nothing about printer name.  I'm assuming that both the hostname and IP address refer to the "HOSTNAME" portion of the above-mentioned Windows format.

\\IP-ADDRESS\PRINTERNAME

or

\\HOSTNAME\PRINTERNAME

\\hostname\printername is an Smb resource name, Hp 5 si doesn't support Smb and you cannot add this printer to a Windows using a Smb name.

You can use Hp Network Printer Wizard
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?locale=en_US&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27908&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us

that will search the printer across the network and it will install it on the pc. Once you will have the printer installed on a server you will be able to share it assigning it a resource name and the printer will appear in the network neighborhood in the other workstations.

It seems awefully odd that I should have to link it to a PC through a network cable and then share it from there, when I could just do the same thing with a parallel cable (which I already have done).

Why have a network card in the printer if you can't make the printer a stand-alone printer that any machine can attach to from anywhere on the network?

your installing it the wrong way...

what you are doing is installing it as a network printer -  windows assumes this to be a shared network printer...

what you need to do is to install it via a standard tcp/ip port..

add printer > local printer > add new port > standard tcp/ip port > enter the ip address and complete the wizard...

barring this download and install HP's Install Network Printer Wizard

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?locale=en_US&pnameOID=19656&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27908&lang=en&cc=us

this should solve the issue

Since you were asking about Smb I assumed that you needed it to authenticate users but you can choose the method you prefer

You can use Network Printer Wizard to install the printer on a server and manage users' rights from this or you can use the utility on all workstations and install the printer on them, it depends by what you need.
