Question

Printer Spooler Subsystem crashes when printing any PDF file to HP 1020 USB Laser Printer

Asked by: microdome7

When printing any PDF file to my clients HP 1020 USB Laser Printer (newest drivers installed), it crashes the printer spooler subsystem.  We have to unplug the printer, stop the print spooler, restart print spooler, remove job, delete printer, and then plug printer back in.  It prints fine to word, excel, test pages, etc.  The computer is running XP Pro SP2.  3 others in the office have the exact same setup and can print it just fine.

I can also print PDF to a network HP 4100N just fine.    The error report shows that the issues was in spooler.exe with module ZSR.dll.

Thanks!

Is this the printer that is installed directly to this machine or is it printing through some other computer?

If it's direct try re-installing the driver. Just go to the driver properties in the properties of the printer and go to update. Point it to a fresh download of the current driver and say "I will chose what driver to install" it will overwrite the old driver. If you try to do it automatically it will tell you that the current driver is already installed and not overwrite it.

.PDF files are notorious for wanting lots of printer memory the HP LaserJet 1020 has a whopping TWO megabytes of printer memory, whereas the 4100N, even if it hasn't been upgraded from its base configuration has SIXTEEN megabytes. It's probable that the 1020 simply does not have enough memory to handle the job, especially if the .PDF is in the least bit complex.

The exact same file prints on the exact same printer on another computer.  The computers are the same model/make/specs and the printers are the exact same model/specs.

I've also installed the newest driver from HP's site.

Any other ideas?

The PDF file is only 40k in size.

What driver are you using. We ONLY use PCL5e's in our environment due to numerous pdf issues. The
PCL5e drivers have always worked wen this type ofissue occurs.

When print pdf file, try to use the advance option and select "Print as image".
I had the same problem, but this options allows me to print without having the spool problem.

Refer to this thread

This issue is a driver issue.
Per the previous thead I tried the 1022 drivers but this didnt work as they are also host based drivers.
Does anyone know what driver would work with an HP1022 that is PCL based not host based?

More details on this that I have found.  I have fully cleaned all drivers from the system and reset the printer spooler per the instructions at the site given above.  I then downloaded the newest HP 1022 drivers from HP and installed them.  (btw, the HP 6L or 6P drivers won't work on the 1022 -- it just sits there if you send a job to it).  I go to print a PDF file and some will work.  Others don't.  The one I have the most problems with that I can replicate the problem is a 6 page PDF that is about 300k in size.  I emailed it to co-worker, and they can print it just fine using the same version of Adobe (8.1.1), same 1020 printer on their machine, same OS (XP Pro SP2) etc.  I have also tried going to Adobe 6.0 and 7.0 to see if that worked -- no fix.

I downloaded a 500kb adobe file from the web and it printed fine.

The exact error is:

Spooler SubSystem App
Spooler SubSystem Appl has encountered a problem and needs to close
SzAppName: spoolsv.exe (5.1.2600.2696)
SzModName: ZSR.DLL (6.20.1625.0)

Thanks,
Andy

Its a known issue!  Its because the 1020 and 1022 use  a host based print driver rather than a PCL based.  Host based do not play nice with .PDF's
I had to switch my users to a 2015 printer because of this

Check here as well.  You will see its a known issue brought up on HP boards

Hint, try checking the amount of disk space available on the PC with the problem.  It sonds crazy, but this has caused this in the past and nobody noticed the C drive was out of space.

Select "Print As Image" under Adobe's advanced options in the printer dialog.  I was having the same problem, tried MANY different fixes, and this is the only one that has appeared to work permanently.
