It could be a driver issue.

Have you tried "HP Printing Diagnostic Utility" to see if this can fix the problem?

well this is the same with my sisters computer also. no i can check that though. this happened on our other HP's also. some one said its just HP.

by: pcandlerPosted on 2008-02-27 at 12:16:42ID: 20997885

We have quite a few HP printers but not this particular model.  None of them remain offline, this would lead me to believe it is a driver or software issue.  The diagnostic utility should let you know if it can detect any problems.

jsthursday,

How does the printer connect to your computer?  How does it connect to your sister's?  Any switches, etc in the middle?  What is the length of cables if you have it directly connected?

What is your OS?

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.

So the printer connected directly to the router.

  1. what are the network setting of the printer ?
  2. what router are you using?

by: jsthursdayPosted on 2008-02-28 at 15:21:10ID: 21009290

linksys WRT54GL wireless router. the network settings are just the printer on line 2 and the computer on line 1.

by: b0lsc0ttPosted on 2008-02-28 at 17:50:01ID: 21009990

So that printer has a network card and you are using the network cable for it, right?

The problem may be the IP.  Have you set up the printer with a static IP?  If not you need to.  The printer should not ever just get it from the router as part of dhcp.  If the router supports it you could set up the router to always give the device the same IP but I don't believe that is an option with your Linksys.

Make sure you assign an IP that won't be used by the router for a computer (i.e. out of the range it will assign).  It still needs to be appropriate for the subnet and gateway though.  If you need help with this then look at what your router currently uses and assigns and provide us that info.  I can suggest one.

Let me know if this is it or if you have a question.

well i think everything is setup at the default dynamic IP's. the printer is connected directly from the printer to the router via a network cable. for now the printer is working fine and online always, but sometimes it just wants to stay offline. i am not sure why. ive tried using static IP's in the past, and they are still confusing me so i never got it setup correctly when i tried it. thanks

what does that do anyhow?

by: b0lsc0ttPosted on 2008-02-28 at 19:11:43ID: 21010444

Basically using a set IP means your computer will always "know" where the printer is.

My recommendation is to set up a static IP.  If you have a question about doing it then I mentioned the info you can provide to us for specific help.  Let me know if you have a question about getting that info or what info I refer to.  A static IP should be used and is usually very easy to setup.  Often you can even use your browser to do it if you know the printer's current IP.

Use the Embedded Web Server to modify network settings

The Embedded Web Server gives you an intuitive interface to your network connection
parameters.

To use the Embedded Web Server to modify network settings
1. Print a network configuration page to find the IP address for the HP All-in-One.
2. In the Address box in your Web browser on your computer, type the IP address of
the HP All-in-One, as shown on the network settings page. For example, http://
192.168.1.101.
The Embedded Web Server Information page appears, showing information for the
HP All-in-One.
NOTE: If you are using a proxy server in your browser, you might need to disable
it to access the Embedded Web Server.
3. Click the Networking tab.
4. Click Wired (802.3) in the navigation menu.
5. Make your changes, and then click Apply.

You can use the control panel on the printer (Setu -> Network -> Advanced -> IP Settings -> select Manual -> then set IP Address, Subnet, and Gateway).  If you need specifics on what to put in these fields then let me know.  We will need you current network settings to suggest what to use.  The gateway and subnet will be the same as your computer.  The IP just a little different.

Let me know if you have a question.

So are you giving up?  Do you not need help on this anymore?  I am a little puzzled by your last comment.

If you do need help or something we have said isn't clear then let us know.  We have both provided some details but can offer more.  If the steps we describe are overwhelming then you may want to hire or get a "computer person" to help you.  They don't need to be an expert with the details we have provided above.  They would just need to be comfortable following the steps and trying it.  It would really help if they know a little about networking so they can know what IP, etc to use.  If that is the part you need help with then let us know.

I am definitely will and able to help more if you need it.  You will have to let us know what you need though.  Changing to a static IP should fix this and is not hard to do. :)
