Hi There!
I'm having a problem with the Printing Preference/Properties Windows for my HP Laserjet 2420 and 4200 printers responding slowly.
I'm setting up a new print server (Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2). There are no other services running on the server. We are running Windows XP Professional (with SP2) on all our workstations. The workstations and server are running at 100Mbps on the network.
I've used HP Network Install Wizard 6.0 to install the port monitors on the print server. I have downloaded the latest PostScript printer drivers (for Windows XP/Server 2003) from the HP website. We need to use PostScript printer drivers and cannot use PCL6 drivers. I have installed the following three types of printers on the server:
HP LaserJet 4050 (we still have quite a few of this older printer in use here)
HP LaserJet 2420
HP LaserJet 4200
When trying to change the Printing Preferences or Properties on the 4050 printers, the printer windows respond quickly. However, when trying to change the Printing Preferences or Properties on the 2420 or 4200 printers, there is an irritating delay when clicking between windows and tabs.
For example, when a user wishes print in duplex, they click File > Print > Properties button and select "Yes, flip over". However, there is an irritating delay between these last two steps with the 2420 and 4200 printers, sometimes up to 2 or 3 seconds. This same delay occurs when clicking on the different tabs in the Printing Preferences window. There are no delays for the 4050 printers.
However, if I try to the same thing with the 2420 or 4200 printers on the server itself, the printer windows respond quickly. The problem only occurs from the workstations, and only with more recent printers (2420 or 4200) not older printers (4050).
I have looked on the Microsoft TechNet, and found only one reference to printer drivers responding slowly on Server 2003 or Windows XP SP2. I tried to install the hotfix recommended, but it did not help.
I have looked on the HP website, but cannot find any problem related to this one.
Is there any way that I can speed up the response of the printer windows? The users are accustomed to the printer windows responding quickly, and are grumbling about the delays.
Thx!
