How does a printer choose which ink to use for black printing?

I have a couple of diocuments recently that were in pure black: spreadsheet and text. On an HP  PSC1215 printer.

When printing it started printing in black then turned green as it went down the page. Examination showed that the magenta ink has run out. Why did the driver software not use black ink rather than the coloured inks to print black?
