Use Illustrator to design template for printable CDs on a HP Photosmart 5280
I recently purchased a HP Photosmart5280 printer to label printable CD/DVDs. The bundled software that came with the printer gives me basically 10 looks and no way to customize them. I have created a template in Illustrator and now my problem is getting the image to the specific CD/DVD input tray provided with the printer.
If I simply select source as CD/DVD tray the printer sounds and acts like it's printing just fine, but no ink is layed down on the CD itself.
I have tried the work around of changing the paper size and placing the artboard at an offset to anticipated where the heads will print the image. When I try and force this paper size to be used with the option of CD/DVD tray there is a error message stating a conflict and no print out.
I am open to software (free or cheap) that will do this but was hoping to avoid the learning curve when I already know that Illustrator can create the design I am looking for.

Thanks for the idea! but unfortunately the bundled software does not allow this operation. It is designed specifically to output to the printer only.
I did however find a work around. I design the label in Illustrator and export to a JPG. Then I simply use this "picture" in HP's most basic one picture template. This works but I am suspecting that the HP software somehow reduces the resolution of the image before printing. I am going to try and use HP brand printable CDs to see if it's an ink compatibility problem that is affecting the printout quality

Have you tried printing one of the bundled software templates to PDF, and then opening the PDF in illustrator to get an idea of where to position your artwork? That would be the first thing I would try.
