Installing HP Drivers halts with error maessage "mdfix01.exe" on XP

When reinstalling HP driver for Photosmart 3310 (ver 7.0) get error referring to
"mdfix01.exe"
and install aborts.
Any help?

That site is where I got the program that is failing. I edited out all references to Hp from my registery but still can't get the drivers to install. Too bad because it was a really sweet little scanner and printer. Can see from other threads in other forums that HP printer software can just stop working without explanation. No fix available from  Hp and they say it is windows related. People have had to switch to different brand of printers. (or maybe format c:) Any other suggestions?
