Question

need to add an HP officejet printer and creat an Ethernet network printer to handle 2 PC"S via a Linksys router

Asked by: ginovino

Until recently, I had 4 pc's being serviced by a single HP 7410 Office jet printer. All 4 Pc's were connected to  LInksys BEF-sr41 4port router v4 & linksys 4 port switch.

The main PC used the printers USB port to monitor the ink level and other HP features. the other 3 pc's printed out their documents directly via the shared printer via the router/ cable modem.

I have just moved and the HP booklet / disk  is no where to be found.

I seem to recall setting this arrangement up was simpke, however, I forgot the steps.

I know that each device on the router has its own IP address, aside from their own "MAC" address.

What specifically are the steps to reestablish a 2 PC configuration to allow the distant printer to print from both the pc;s? The locally seated PC which is using a USB cable diretctly to the Printer and the distant printer which is connected via a Router / Cable modem?

I have spent days online with HP east asian tech support and NOTHING TO SHOW FOR MY VERY COSTLY TIME AND ENERGIES.

i NEED STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO GET THIS ACCOMPLISHED BY TOMORROWThe HP printer provides a complete Network configuration page as part of its self test..

FYI, when I originally set up this "network" the 4 computers and the HP 7410 were each connected via Cat5e to each port of the router.

The HP software was installed on each of the PC's. Only 2 of the 4 Pc's remain in my possesion. The Software was never removed from the remaining PC's. So, it should all be sitting on the HD for use.

I don't believe I need to use a disk or added software to get the distant machine to recognize the HP printer.

by: tankergoblinPosted on 2009-06-16 at 20:10:49ID: 24644605

so you mean 2 of your pc can read printer and the other 2 cannot?

the page i show you not only for driver but also step.

You can see very clearly that there is a section call wireless and network.

hence you use your printer as network device therefore you need to do something on your printer to read your pc ip.

Each printer has different setting. As on how to set pls refer to website given to you.

Let me know if you have any question

cheers.

let me try to make this easy..

I have 2 computers and one HP 7410 printer.

I want the printer in my office (local)  to continue to use the USB connection to my primary computer so as to allow the use of the scanning and Photo card reader ability of the printer.

Both computers share a cable modem via a Linksys 4 port router to the internet via cat-5e cables.

I want the distant computer to be able to print using the printers URL, IP address or whatever its called.

It was once hooked this way to allow several computers to use the same printer in my former home.

I just forgot how to accomplish this.

Try as I might to get an answer from the HP tech support is like pulling Elephant teeth! I have read the online guides and they just read like gibberish to me.

I am a paying member of this forum and can't imagine why I haven't received more responses with this simple issue?

you have read but have you follow the step by step?

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-06-23 at 20:09:35ID: 24697985

I'll try this one more time...

My local computer is connected to the printer via a USB cable. This same computer is connected to a router/cable modem for access to the internet via CAT 5e cable.

I have a 2nd computer in a different place in the home also connected to this same 4 port router via CAT-5e. Its internet connection is adequate.

I have a HP 7410 printer which I have ALSO connected to the router via CAT- 5E, My intention is have this printer serve the "2nd" computer via the Printers IP address.

My difficulty is setting computer #2 to "see" the HP printer and its IP address. I need some one to walk me through the steps to do that....

I hope I made myself clearer this time....

by: tankergoblinPosted on 2009-06-23 at 21:01:52ID: 24698153

i believe Setup is relatively straightforward pls follow the link of the  instruction manual i gave you first.

by: ginovinoPosted on 2009-06-24 at 05:02:30ID: 24700178

That is exactly the setup I have currently. I did indeed try the link s you provided without success.

I found the original install disk and will attempt to do this again. let me share with what I know so far. Each device connected to the router is given a IP address by the router. As the router has only 4 ports, each device will be assigned sequential IP addresses, Correct? This however, will be different when it comes to MAC addresses as the manufacturer determines that during the assembly process, correct?

If I do I "cmd" IPCONFIG on each computer it should tell me the real IP address, DNS & subnet mask for each machine, correct? The printer also has the ability to provide that for itself. So it seems to me its just a matter of setting that information up on distant computer, correct?

by: tankergoblinPosted on 2009-06-24 at 18:46:14ID: 24707467

ok.

first i answer you question
 >>As the router has only 4 ports, each device will be assigned sequential IP addresses, Correct?
yes, but you can manually set an ip address and subnet mask to it.(sometimes you just need to do that)

>>This however, will be different when it comes to MAC addresses as the manufacturer determines that during the assembly process, correct?
MAC is a unique identifier assigned to NIC by the manufacturer(fix) and it is in layer 2. Basically it has no much connection with ip address cause ip is in layer 3.

>>If I do I "cmd" IPCONFIG on each computer it should tell me the real IP address, DNS & subnet mask for each machine, correct?
yes correct

OK, above is the question you ask

now let do some troubleshoot.

try to unplug your primary pc with usb cable (unplug it)
that mean you only got printer, router and pc#2 on your network

now hence you has set everything.

i believe you can do pinging right.

go to run>cmd and ping printer ip
see it works or not.

After I wrote you my suppositions, I took the time to delete the printers appearing on the remote computer.

I checked all connections and verified the Ip address of all devices.

I ran the HP Win XP printer install disk. This time the disk searched for and recognized the remote printer appearing at the router. It installed the printers IP address and acknowledged its existence.

I set up the defaults for the printer  on the 2nd PC and it now can print on the printer in question.

Of course its speed is many times slower than if connected via a USB cable, but speed isn't important at the moment, but rather printing convenience which I didn't have previously.

In view that I resolved the matter myself , I will provide you partial credit for your assistance.
