Question

HP LJ4/4M PS 64-bit printer driver(s) needed

Asked by: BAmiller

I've got W7 - RTM 64-bit on an i7, 12-GB, SSD rig.   I have an app that requires an HP LaserJet 4/4M PS driver to be installed on a "local" PSPORT.  I've searched high and low, far-and-wide, and have found multiple links to "alleged" HP 64-bit print drivers, but they all fail to install in W7-64.  Some of the errors indicated that I needed to modify a local policy in order to "disable" the "Disallow install of Kernal Mode Printer Drivers" -  Even that setting "on" - still no go.  Can't find a working 64-bit HP LaserJet 4 driver for W7-64.  Bummer.

Even HP's own web site only tells you to go look on your "Vista"-64 bit disc.  I did - found none.

Anyone?

Windows comes with a large number of drivers. The LJ4 PS driver is one of those - but I don't have a 64-bit machine to se if M$ have stuffed up. To check, run the Add Printer wizard. When the list of printer models comes up, look under HP and it should be there.

Of course, if you need this driver to install on a 32-bit server, then that is a horse of a whole different colour!

I don't know the answer to the question, but I can confirm that Windows 7 64-bit (I have the Release Candidate version, build 7100, rather than the later RTM version) appears to have a much smaller list of HP LaserJet devices than earlier versions of the OS.

In particular:

HP Color LaserJet: 2700 Series PCL6; 2800 Series PS; 9500 PCL6; CM3530 MFP PCL6; CM6030 MFP PCL6; CM6040 MFP PCL6; CP1510 series PCL6; CP2020 Series PCL6; CP3505 PCL6; CP3525 PCL6; CP4005 PCL6; CP5220 Series PCL6; CP6015 PCL6.

HP LaserJet: 1320 PCL5e; 2200 Series PCL5; 2300 Series PS; 2300l PS; 3050 PCL5; 3052 PCL5; 3055 PCL5; 3390 / 3392 PCL5; 4100 Series PCL6; 4200/4300 PCL6; 4250 PCL6; 5200 Series PCL 5; 5200L Series PCL 5; M3027 mfp PCL6; M3035 mfp PCL6; M4345 mfp PCL6; M5025 mfp PCL6; M5035 mfp PCL6; M9040 MFP PCL6; M9050 MFP PCL6; P2015 PCL6; P2050 Series PCL6; P3004 PCL6; P3005 PCL6; P3011/P3015 PCL6; P4014/P4015 PCL6; P4515 PCL6.

I guess that this may be for two reasons:

(1) MS insists that 64-bit drivers are certified/signed.

(2) HP is moving towards Universal Print Drivers for all devices - as far as I'm aware, this applies to PCL5 and PostScript drivers for all current devices, and will also apply to PCL6 drivers with new models within a failrly short timescale.

Well, HP have a 64-bit universal printer driver. Download it from:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=503519&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=503548

If that does not work, you can always try the Xerox Global Printer driver. It is supposed to work with other manufacturer's printers as well. I know the PS driver does that very well, but I have never tried the PCL driver that way. Get it from:

HP provide several web pages defining support for printing & imaging devices with Windows 7; for LasrJet devices, see http://h41112.www4.hp.com/promo/win7web/printer-support/us/en/laserjet.html

This suggests that support is available for LaserJet 4M printers via Windows Update, although (from a quick glance) it doesn't differentiate between 32- and 64-bit editions, not does it indicate just how to obtain these extra drivers via the MS update mechanism.

The "Install the printer driver" dialogue of the "Add printer" wizard lets you choose from a built-in list (from which I extracted the LaserJet and Color LaserJet models in an earlier response).

This dialogue also includes two buttons:

"Have Disk" - this allows selection of an OEM driver.

"Windows Update" - this will apparently retrieve a list of additonal supported models (it may take a few minutes to do so).
I haven't yet tried it out myself, so I don't know whether what is offered matches the list in the HP support document I provided the link to earlier.

by: DansDadUKPosted on 2009-09-03 at 10:25:31ID: 25252850

I tried the "Windows Update" button (as per above) on my Windows 7 RC 64-bit system.

It took a few minutes for anything to happen, but eventually I got an updated printer list (with LOTS more devices in the "HP" group, and a few in a "Hewlett Packard" group).

The extended "HP" group included one for LaserJet 4M PS, so I installed this (using FILE: as the port, since I don't have a LJ 4M).

The "Test print" feature generated a print stream in a nominated file; the contents indicate that it is a PostScript Level 2 stream - I've no idea whether this will work OK with a LJ 4M, but I don't see why not.

I have been told by P themselves that they no longer support the HP LJ4.  Regardless, the Windows Update option noted did pull a list that allowed the install of the HP4 - 64 bit under W7 - so it works for me!
