Adding numbers to print jobs

I was wondering if anyone knows of a solution that would either automatically add a job number or ask the user for a job number that can be entered and then seen on all print outs.

A little background: We are an ad agency and we have to perform multiple runs of high quality plotter work. We want to make sure that we are keeping track of these prints by job number.

Ideally I'm looking for an OTS solution that can work in both a Mac and PC environment.
