I got one of these and its a bit hit and miss for network printing.

I hate upgrading software or firmware without any good reason - you're swapping one set of bugs for another. What problems are you having? What exactly happens when your printing is "hit-and-miss"? In many cases a cold reset will fix printing problems.

Problems:
I power on/off the printer a good bit and it forgets its IP address it seems - is this normal? Is there no chip / battery to remember this?

The printer should not forget its IP address. It is not in battery-powered RAM.

How does the printer obtain its IP address? From DHCP, or is it a static address?

You say it "seems" to forget its IP address. What does that mean?

Can you still ping it? Does the correct address show up when you print a config page?
