>>if i try to print from dos i get the message: printer error on 'lpt1'
Then your printer (or your paralell port) have real troubles. To help to determine who is the responsible, you can choose:
a) Try the printer at another machine
If it works, then the paralell port has a malfunction.
If it doesn't, your printer is broken.
b) Try another printer in the same port
If it works, then printer is down.
If it doesn't, parallel port is out.
If even DOS reports an error,it's not a driver problem.
-Look REAL close at both ends of the cable, especially at the PC end - plugged all the way in?
-Unplug the cable and inspect the pins.
-What type is the parallel port set to: SPP,EPP,or ECP? Newer systems let you specify this in BIOS.Older ones may have jumpers on a board or give you no choice but SPP.Verify your port is set to what the printer requires.
-Does Device Manager report any conflicts? What resources does it report being used by the port? Don't trust Win95 to be honest, look under 'Computer' and verify yourself that nothing else is using any of the port's resources.
I would have to go with MATTCEI if your printer requires SPP and you have an ECP printer port that right there could put you out of business.
I guess I need some clarification on what exactly is happening at this point because I see your orginal posting sayiong that the printer is out of paper there are two things that could cause this
1. Your port is ECP or EPP and your printer requires SPP
2. There is a file more commonly found in win98 but I have seen it windows 95 named drvwppqt.vxd
Nut there is mention intially of the error being out of ppr then you now mention it is saying "printer error" if it is reporting printer error in dos I would have to say then the main board in the printer is fried.
Here is how to find out what your port is set as
1. Go to start, settings, control panel, double click "system", go to "device manager tab" about 2/3 of the way down on that screen ti will say "ports com & lpt" click the "+" sign next to it then double click LPT1 go to resources in the white box it should say Input/Ouput Range and probably Iterrupt Request if it says "Direct Memory Access" in that box it is an ECP printer port and you will need to get into your BIOS and change it to an SPP port. If it does nto say "direct memory access" then it is probably not ECP
To find the drvwppqt.vxd file listed above
Go to start, find, files or folders, where it says look in make ssure it is looking in either my computer or C: then for named type in the following without quotes "drvwppqt.vxd" then click find now if windows finds this file this is your culprit right click on the file select rename and then put your cursor and the end of the d in vxd left click once and backspace to the . so you only have "drvwppqt." type in OLD and hit enter the new file name should now be "drvwppqt.old" shutdown your pc and printer for 1 minute then reboot printer first. If problem still persits then it is something else or if you did not find this file then it is something else

First time, check your ink cartridge if they are OK and you can restart your computer and reset your Printer.
