Check BIOS to see if LP port is set according to your printer (SP, EPP, etc.).

If this is an actual error message it is generated when the operating system cannot detect that the printer is ready. This can be caused by paper out or off line. Some printers also send these signals for conditions like the covers being open, etc. In order to answer the question more information is required. Is this an error message or simply an observation? What sort of parallel port? Is the printer correctly configured (to use parallel port)? Are you printing from DOS, Windows or something else?

What verison of windows do you have ?

I would try the following:
Go to start, find, files or folders then where it says look in select either c: or my computer where it says named type in the following DRVWPPQT.VXD AND click find now it may not find the file if it does not do not worry about it if it does then right click on the file and select rename put your cursor at the end of D in VXD left click once backspace 3 times to the dot it should now say DRVWPPQT. type in OLD and hit enter it should now read DRVWPPQT.OLD close the find program shutdown your PC and Printer for 1 minute reboot try to print again.

If the file was not found or this does not work to properly troubleshoot it without giving a mile long list to you I need to know the following
What version of windows you are running ?
Ram ?
Processor?
Printer brand and model    i.e. HP550
I also need to know if you are getting this error msg. in dos or windows ?
Also is there more to this error message other than just "error writing to lpt1" ?

If you run NT4 reapply ServicePack 3. I had the same error message on a PC, did not know what to do, so I reapplied the ServicePack 3 and the problem disappeared.
