If you are running Windows 95 any JetAdmin 2.5 or better should work, if you are running Windows98, use the HP files (HP v.2.54) on the Windows98 cdrom.

Hmmm... 5M, the Mac printer... So it shoudl be compatible, and all interfaces should be active.

When you said "doesn't recognize", what exactly was the error message? What type of network are you using?

i use an Ethernet network, and by "not recognize"
i mean that when i install JetAdmin, it appears as if i dont have a printer connected to the network

The jetdirect card may not be working correctly.

Actually, the computer may not be using the other protocols. Can you configure your jetadmin to talk TCP/IP and/or Appletalk? If so, you may be able to see the printer. As this was a Mac printer, it may be configured only to talk AppleTalk.

If you know the printer's IP address, try TELNET to it, you may get the direct access menu to the Jetdirect to run a few configurations. You may need to turn on the other protocols so the JetAdmin can see it.

Look for the hardware adress of the printer network card.
If your network is very large (several dozens printer cards/boxes visible for JetAdmin) HP JetAdmin may have problems to detect all.
Look for unconfigured cards or set a filter on the hardware adress.
You should get the HW adress via a printer selftest print out.

Install the DLC protocol on your servers/workstations

liebla:

I forgot about that.  You're quite correct about JetAdmin and large networks.  In fact, occasionally a printer that had been previously configured gets lost.

I don't know if this is applicable to this case, but it's a good point.

Problem is and only is "M" letter in your printer's model :(. I mean, your HP5M have not PostScript module factory installed (like it exist in HP5MP) - without this module your printer will not apper in the list of your Ethernet-connected devices. You need to buy (app $300) PostScript SIMM EXACTLY for HP5M model in insert it. After it you will be able print from PC as well as Mac trough Ethernet. And, please, forget about TCP/IP and DCL :)

Voila

by: lieblaPosted on 1999-05-20 at 01:03:30ID: 2015774

PostScript has NOTHING to do with Network connection.
The problem is the hardware and software configuration of the network printer card and the client computers.
raw_e:
Do you use an original HP network card for the printer which has to be installed into the printer (and not an external HP JetDirect Box where the connection Box-printer is established by  a normal parallel centronics cable) ?

What is the configuration of the clients which should use the printer (NT, MacOS, network protocol TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Apple Talk) ?
Under which Operating system (NT, W9x) do you run JetAdmin ?
If everything is MAC I cannot help you.

by: billkoPosted on 1999-05-20 at 06:02:18ID: 2015775

I agree with liebla.  Blaming PostScript for JetAdmin not seeing your printer is like blaming Windows95 for your computer not POSTing.

Non-HP printer server boxes or cards won't be seen by JetAdmin.  If it *is* an HP product, then maybe you should look into replacing the JetDirect card/box.  JetAdmin should see the printer unless you're using some weird protocol.
