Print Performance Issue on NT 4.0 compared to Win98

Environment: WinNT 4.0 sp6
LAN: 10/100 Mbps
Application: Windows apps, eg. powerpoint used
Printer: PCL based printer


Printing of a 93 page powerpoint file took 7 minutes to complete spooling.  The same file is printed on Windows 98 and it took 2 minutes to complete spooling.

(how I measured spooling time is measuring from the Windows printer console the time between the print job appearing and disappearing on the screen)

I have checked an option on the NT driver to print immediately while receiving the spool file but it still spools the entire file before printing.  On 98, as soon as it spools 1 page, it will print as it spools the subsequent pages.

Is this a known problem on NT?

Is the printer a network printer on an NT server by any chance?

If so then the difference is that much of the processing is done on the server, whereas with win9x the entire processing is done on the workstation, which may be a faster CPU than the server, and the process has a higher priority (its the only priority) and the information sent over the network is more complex (windows metafiles instead of printer language)

You could configure the NT workstations to print directly to the printer if its a Network printer like an HP JetDirect printer, you may see a tremendous difference.

If this is not feasible, you could also configure the printer as a local printer with a network port, instead of a connection to a remote printer. To do this, install a local printer, and define a new "local" port consisting of the UNC network name (\\server\printershare)

Either way, by using a local printer, you ensure that all print processing is done on the workstation instead of the server.

It is already currently configured as a local printer with a network port.

1) Did you do reverse order printing? Or something like booklet printing?
2) Try other applications.

You can connect this printer via LPR port and chose the nearest driver for the printer instead the exact driver and check wather this will help or not.
