Hello,
I have made sure that the bios setting is correct as well as the making sure that the parallel port is configured correctly. It didn't solve the problem. I have even reloaded windows.
Thank you again.

Browse All TopicsI have an old HP Laser Jet III printer which all of a sudden quit printing. The error message is telling me to make sure that my printer cable is hooked up and also that it's not sending any data. I know that the printer itself and the printer cable are fine because I have hooked it up to another computer, and it works. I have tried reinstalling LPT1. I have also tried reinstalling the software that is provided in the computer. I don't have the original disks anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you.

Annie,
Sounds like a driver issue to me. Try going to
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/
(yep all that above is the URL) and download the "latest" (1998) driver for the HP III.
You could also try using the GENERIC/TEXT driver and see if you get any joy (although you won't be able to print graphics, it will prove a comms link between the laser and the PC).
-- What version of Windows are you running (I am assuming you are running windows and not L/unix)?
Does the printer react in anyway when you reboot the PC (lights flash).
(2) Does another printer work on the offending PC. Might be that -- you haven't said if you tried this?
(3) is the PC networked? As a last resort you could make the printer a shared printer across the network and log onto it that way.

Hello,
I have been to the site and downloaded a driver for the laser jet III, and it ended up being an older one than was stored on my computer. So I didn't have much luck with that. I am running Windows98. I believe it is second edition. When I reboot the computer the printer doesn't react in anyway. I have tried hooking up another printer, and that one didn't work either. This PC is not networked.
Thank you
Annie
Ah, so the problem is with the PC itself not the printer (which is why the "new" old drivers did not work).
Looks like a dodgy parallel port here. I suspect as well your PC is getting on a bit (judging by the fact you're running Windows 98).
There might be a loose connection on the port, or something more serious. You need to get a PC engineer to have a look.

Just had another thought. Might do the trick. If your BIOS is playing up then it's possible its not allowing Windows to see the port correctly.
Try this. Take the cover off the PC and locate the battery. Remove it. Power the PC down and remove the power lead. Wait 30 secs for the PC to completely power down.
Replace the battery and the power lead and reboot. You will need to reset the date and time but it might, just might, clear the problem.
It shoulds like your LPT1 port has failed. If you can disable it in your BIOS, you can purchase another parallel port at a computer store for $15 - 30. Set it to LPT1 and print.
If you cannot, then buy another printer port, set it for LPT2, set the settings in Windows for the printer to LPT2 and print away.
If you would like a spare HPIII, I've got one. $25 (USD) plus you pay shipping. (I'm in South Georgia, US)
Annie,
If your PC is a few years old, there may be a cable connecting the parallel port socket on the motherboard to the connector on the backplate where you attach the parallel cable from the printer?
It may have worked loose at the motherboard end. It is usually a flat cable with the pin1 edge striped.
Good Luck

Check your bios setting to make sure the parallel port is configured. Aslo go into windows control panel and check your ports.
