"out of paper message", but not really out of paper.

I moved an HP IIIP from a laptop to a desktop running win2000 server (no client workstations attached).  I can print to the laptop, but when I have the IIIP connected to the desktop and I print a page from notepad, all seems to be going okay but when I delete the document in the printer status window, I get the message that the "printer is out of paper."

I have looked at the settings on the printer from the control panel and the settings are the same as in the laptop.

The desktop 'sees' the printer, as does Word.  When I send a "test Print PAge" to the printer, the result says it's okay.  But the test did not print anything.

I have another printer attached to this desktop, an HP 5550 inkjet and I can print to it w/o any errors.

Anybody have an idea of what to try or look for?
