Unable to install driver for Dell A960 multifunction printer

I've been trying to install the software for my new printer.  Everey time I get an error message saying the driver is not installed or the specified print monitor is unknown.  I've tried unhooking the printer and installing the software first.  But I can't get past , you need to hook up your printer before the software can be installed.  My OS is XP Home.
