Unfortunately, the size of a print job bears no relation to the size of the document. Here are some of the factors that affect print file size.
First of all, the print size depends on the printer language (PCL, PostScript, etc). For simple jobs PCL produces smaller output files, for heavy graphics PS is often smaller. File size for PCL graphics also depends on the resolution of the printer; PS does not.
Another factor that can make a major difference is job collation. Unless the printer is smart enough to do it, the application needs to send every copy of every page; i.e. 5 collated copies of a 10 page document means that 50 pages will be sent to the printer. Without collation, each page needs to be sent once only and the printer produces the extra copies (unless the printer is a low-end inkjet, which can't even do that).
Next, if your document has graphics repeated on every page, the graphics are stored only once in the document, but need to be sent to the printer for every page.
Acrobat allows you to "Print as image". In different versions of Reader this is located in different parts of the print dialogue box. This is used sometimes to avoid printing problems but it can produce enormous print jobs.
